Yea, probably not. But for AMD, the can sell the high wattage chips. But for a semi-cutom, idk what they'll do with the extras. Each batch would be wasteful=costly, unless they disable stuff and repurpose them for something else.


They could probably try to sell them as smartphone chips or something, not sure if they would be competitive at that point. I just found this

Is that right? They were making a killing on that thing if so. They could've easily started that thing at 150-200 when it first released.

As for BC depending on what medium they use, I think they will stay with soild state carts since they are now the memory storage of choice atm.

To manufacture ? It's probably no more than $65 even if yields are poor but variabilitiy gets worse once you transition to newer nodes that provide better chip scaling. The reason for this has to do with the fact that random placements of atoms on smaller and smaller transistors can have some serious affects to the electrical properties of the said transistor. 

After all, with 22nm the distance between the source and the drain is 50 silicon atoms. 



You'd think that Nintendo would go with somebody, anybody, who actually had experience making and selling ARM SoCs in mobile devices.

I think it's about right, but it doesn't account for shipping and distribution and exchange rate (i believe at the time JYen was deflating). Still, 3DS is cheap. That is why I don't think they'll push the specs of their next gens.

They won't but what will be considered "pushing the specs" in a couple of years will be more than this I think.

Well, I would consider using Mullin as example to come up with the specs as pushing it. I think it's more logical to look at AMD Beema 10-15W to come up some with specs. But considering this is Nintendo we are talking about, they probably would go very conservative. For example it is rumor 3DS has dual 266MHz ARM11s, but ARM11 can clock pretty high upto 1GHz(? i think). I'm thinking something like low-to-lowMid ranges of next years phones or even this years smartphones.



wspisel (sp?) on NeoGaf said that one of the lead engineers at NTD (Nintendo's tech division) used to work for Qualcomm, which makes the Snapdragon processors.

I think a ARM + Snapdragon duo is more likely, simply because that can probably beat AMD on price for performance. Snapdragon ships its chips in huge volumes as they're used in Samsung phones among other devices.

Something like a customized Snapdragon 808 or 810 for Nintendo?



What is the performance of the 808 and 810? The only thing I can find is that it COULD be 200 gigaflops.
