Forums - Gaming - Anyone else feel games without achievements/trophies are a waste of time?

Not at all. The game itself should be my motivation, not the urge to get gamer points. I think part of the idea of achievements is neat only because it can encourage you to play the game in ways you may not have otherwise, but aside from that I don't really see their value.

I would love to have them on wii u, but they aren't necessary

No. And I find that really sad.

I don't find them necessary, nor cool, just sad. When I go back and play Super Metroid, or Civilization III, (that's a Nintendo game, and a PC game), it's because the game is bloody awesome, not to mark a virtual check-list and feel special.

But, evidently there is a lot of people that want to feel special, Nintendo should've added something to address those gamers.

I'd say Trophies/achievements themselves are a waste of time, not to mention distracting, annoying, and immersion-destroying.

nope

Global achievements simply enforce the "everyone's a winner" mentality, leaving most so-called "achievements" to be nothing more than pedestrian hurdles, which would either be otherwise mandatory checkpoints throughout the game, or unnecessary grinding.

Leave achievements in only where they actually are. Metal Gear Solid's Peacewalker achievement comes to mind; completing the game without killing anyone. Even then, an achievement system isn't needed, unlocked skins/content would be sufficient (avoiding immersion-breaking popups).

Ha... back in 2009 there were a million I hate achievement threads. This was before the PS3 got trophies. Now the threads are in reverse and most people seem to enjoy them some what (except a lot of Nintendo only gamers). Got my first Platinum for Infamous: Second Son weeks back. Fun trophies. They are not a must, but they certainly make a lot of games better giving motivation to do more with a game.

a) No
b) We have stamps which are basically achievements in most new Nintendo titles

I tend to trophy hunt after finishing a title, usually with open world/sandbox games. The reason being that trophies quite often lead to an area of the game world the main missions didn't. Trophies encourage exploration in some games.

An example for me would be Shadow of the Colossus. In the PS2 version I didn't bother trying to level up my stamina in order to climb to the secret temple garden. However when I played the game again on PS3 there were trophies associated with getting to the garden and maxing stamina, so I found myself having some fun searching for silver tail lizards (they help increase stamina). Doing so led me all over the map and I enjoyed some map areas I didn't even know existed (including the satisfaction of finally getting to the garden of course).

Other than that though, they aren't necessary to enjoy a game.

Trophies are good, i've played many games that i never would have played in the first place if it wasnt for their trophies.
