Global achievements simply enforce the "everyone's a winner" mentality, leaving most so-called "achievements" to be nothing more than pedestrian hurdles, which would either be otherwise mandatory checkpoints throughout the game, or unnecessary grinding.

Leave achievements in only where they actually are. Metal Gear Solid's Peacewalker achievement comes to mind; completing the game without killing anyone. Even then, an achievement system isn't needed, unlocked skins/content would be sufficient (avoiding immersion-breaking popups).
