And Square Enix went multiplat with their biggest franchise for MS last gen.
This explains a lot.
Also Mistwalker went MS last gen, and they only do mobile games

The last part confused me. I thought these were bad things?
It seems like a lot of studios nowadays need financial support. That's where companies like MS, Sony, Nintendo, and EA step in.

Pretty much dates back to when Halo was shown. Looked awful on the mac, MS whipped Bungie into shape.

Microsoft then funds the game expecting maximum efford because of their need for a good-selling game to clean their problems. It's probably cheaper than negociate with a more stable studio. |
This, a studio that is financially stable would be able to fund their own games. And would be more than likely going after multiplat releases. Since MS doesn't have a vast pedigree of in house first party studios, it makes sense to subcontract 3rd party studios and publish their games (makingthem 2nd party). Cheaper way to gurantee the game will be exclusive.
Sony does the same thing, though not like how MS does it. Sony looks for start up studios, small ambitious teams that simply lack the exposure or funding to bring a AAA game to market. Makes an agreement to publish their game then somewhere down the road buys the studio. They did it with ND, media molecule, gureilla games, sucker punch and seem to be doing it with Ready at dawn right now.

Can't be. Folks claimed the game industry was in serious trouble, and heading deeper into it, over a generation earlier. If there were any truth to that, those folks' warnings would have been heeded by some of the visionary geniuses in The Industry.
It's something Sony has yet to figure out. Instead of paying out the ass for a higher profile dev, they can pay for an exclusive from a dev that makes great quality games, even if ithey don't happen to sell that well. Instead, Sony pays for all these indie timed exclusives, which are average or worse at best.
You can't ask MS for cash if your in good financial health. So yeah more profits to be made that way.
