Microsoft then funds the game expecting maximum efford because of their need for a good-selling game to clean their problems. It's probably cheaper than negociate with a more stable studio. |
This, a studio that is financially stable would be able to fund their own games. And would be more than likely going after multiplat releases. Since MS doesn't have a vast pedigree of in house first party studios, it makes sense to subcontract 3rd party studios and publish their games (makingthem 2nd party). Cheaper way to gurantee the game will be exclusive.
Sony does the same thing, though not like how MS does it. Sony looks for start up studios, small ambitious teams that simply lack the exposure or funding to bring a AAA game to market. Makes an agreement to publish their game then somewhere down the road buys the studio. They did it with ND, media molecule, gureilla games, sucker punch and seem to be doing it with Ready at dawn right now.
