For twenty-eight years, fans of The Legend of Zelda have slashed at Octoroks, solved puzzles and rescued princesses and sages just as Link does on screen: by themselves. With the exception of the two Four Swords games, The Legend of Zelda has long been single-player. It seems, however, that series producer Eiji Aonuma is ready to change this and add multiplayer Zelda experiences, perhaps to the upcoming Zelda for Wii U releasing next year.
Talking to Game Informer about Hyrule Warriors‘ multiplayer, which has long been a tradition of Dynasty Warriors games, Aonuma recounted how he wanted to change much of the foundational Zelda experience that has become formulaic over the years. In the interview, Aonuma said that more Zelda multiplayer is coming:
When I was talking back about making Zelda more than just a single-player experience? That’s something you will see in the future, maybe next year.
What kind of multiplayer Zelda can we expect to see in the game? It doesn’t seem too farfetched, given Aonuma’s recent comments about rethinking the Zelda experience, that playable characters other than Link will appear in the game, allowing some sort of co-op play. This remains to be seen, however, and we will have to wait until we get closer to the game’s release later next year to find out more.
