I guess it's not bad for the first year or so, let PS3 and 360 owners have the game too.
Once developers get used to the next-gen systems and sales start picking up, they'll move on.

Every sale matters I suppose. I don't think it takes much effort on their part to release it on multiple systems.
It's only a matter of time before this whole cross gen thing ends once more people are on board with the new systems.

It boils down to what matter more to them. Their vision and goal for the game or a few extra sales.

~1/3 of sales is not a few extra sales though. I'm sure their vision would have cost more than the extra revenue the prior gen brings in. Its a win for the publisher in that the most likely have the game already running from a high end PC, so they really only need to make it once then roll out to the consumer in one fell swoop like watch dogs or in tier, like that of GTA V. It helps smooth sales in times when those publishers normally would have nothing for that quarter/month/season etc.
| Mystro-Sama said: Am I the only one who has noticed this. Publishers are so antsy at the thought of putting their game on ever single platform possible that they don't even realise that it isn't even worth the investment. I understand that in the past stepping into the next generation was pretty difficult due to sales being slow in the first year or so. But thats in the past. Gamers are adapting to this generation faster than they ever have in any generation. Look at all the cross gen games that have come out thus far and see how abysmal the previous gen sales are.
Watch Dogs: PS4: 1.86m X1: 0.90m PS3: 0.43m 360: 0.46m
Wolfenstein: The New Order: PS4: 0.42m X1: 0.24m PS3: 0.11m 360: 0.11m
Thief: PS4: 0.44m X1: 0.27m PS3: 0.18m 360: 0.16m
Notice in ever game you have to add both last gen versions just to reach the X1 numbers? This just proves that it's pointless. The only exception to this is for call of duty... and thats pretty much it. Publishers waste time doing this shit instead of focusing on the current gen and getting the best out their games like Rocksteady.
Thoughts? |
I wouldn't call that pointless. Consider that watchdog's last-gen sales almost equal all of Xbox One's sales. That's a big chunk of money right there!
I disagree. People are still buying cross gen games on both old and new platforms. What I think is starting to become pointless is games only being released on old gen. I think a TON of people would have bought Stick Of Truth, Dark Souls 2, and Borderlands pre-sequel on X540 and PS4. I'm glad I waited on Metro and GTA5 for purchase. Played lots of both but now I can pay for them on new gen. 65 bucks on games for ps360 when you own ps540 totally sucks.

Bolded because of hyper correctness.

Agreed. Add in the fact that development cost is probably far lower, and you receive 1/2 of your potential profits from 7th gen consoles.
Not putting these IPs on a 160 million installbase would not be pointless, it would be simply stupid.
Vote the Mayor for Mayor!
It depends, there are still numerous that can still get over a million sales on 7th gen. Watch Dogs will still sell millions on PS3 and 360. Wolfenstein may have impressive numbers in the long run.
The numbers we're seeing thus far on 8th gen is impressive and encouraging for developers looking to move away 7th gen.

in the case of watch dogs case, PS360 sales accounted for almost 22% of overall sales, which is a pretty big number. and according to this the PS360 version brought in around 24 million. this is of course without Digital Sales ( i am assuming there is a PSN and XBL versions). and keep in mind this is just week one. they will both probably sell more than one million on each console, meaning huge amounts of money for Ubisoft.
in the case of wolfenstein, PS360 had a higher percentage of sales than WD with 25%. thats big, a really big percentage of sales.
and in Theifs case PS360 sales accounted for around 32%. thats around one third of sales. thats huge.
if you think these numbers are pointless.... well i dont know what else to say.
