You know how I see it?

Watch Dogs would have 1m less sales without cross gen. Over 1/3 of the sales.

Wolfenstein: The New Order would have .22m less sales without cross gen. Over 1/3 of the sales.

Thief would have .34m less sales without cross gen. Over 1/3 of the sales.

Cross gen isn't pointless. When people stop buying it, companies will stop making it.

It boils down to what matter more to them. Their vision and goal for the game or a few extra sales.

~1/3 of sales is not a few extra sales though.  I'm sure their vision would have cost more than the extra revenue the prior gen brings in.  Its a win for the publisher in that the most likely have the game already running from a high end PC, so they really only need to make it once then roll out to the consumer in one fell swoop like watch dogs or in tier, like that of GTA V.  It helps smooth sales in times when those publishers normally would have nothing for that quarter/month/season etc.
