Forums - Nintendo - People are underestimating the sales potential of Bayonetta 2 (plus predictions)

No, the potential for sales in general. Or do you think that only fans of a series can buy a game in the series?

I don't tink there are 600k Wii U owners clamoring for Bayonetta.

They don't need to be clamouring for the game. Like I said, it doesn't need to be fans of the series - hence why the original game is being included. You get maybe 500k buying the game (and potentially the system) because of how much they liked Bayonetta, and then you get 1 million people curious about the game and picking it up based on news/reviews/word of mouth. I'm not saying this is what will happen, but that it's logic by which Nintendo might choose to publish it that doesn't depend on it selling exclusively to fans of the first game.

I just struggle to understand how anyone can honestly believe that a console that is destined to have an optimistic 20m installed base and a pour track record for games like Bayonetta selling well would have any chance of Bayonetta 2 reaching anywhere near 1m sales when the original barely sold more than 2m on a combined installed base of over 160m who are statistically more likely to purchase a game like that.

Bayonetta 2 is one of my most anticipated Wii U games of the year, not that that's saying much, but that doesn't mean that I'm naive enough to think that everyone will do the same.

So Bayonetta 2 is destined to sell bad because the system is destined to sell bad, and the system is destined to sell bad because games like Bayonetta 2 are destined to sell bad.

Do you see the problem, yet?

Yeah. The Wii U doesn't offer enough games that are destined to sell well to make the system destined to sell well. If the Wii U actually had more than two games a year that actually had a shot at moving signifigant numbers of consoles like Mario Kart 8 and Smash, maybe games like Bayonetta 2 would actually have a believable shot at success. It doesn't, so it doesn't. The only thing it has in it's favor is that the tiny hardcore installed base on the Wii U is desparate for anything good at this point, so the attach rate is much higher.

So you don't see the problem. Your argument is circular.

Bayonetta ain't in a niche genre, it is in the quite popular action genre.

The problem of the 360/PS3 versions of Bayonetta 1: it had much competition of similar games (God of War, Devil May Cry, Dante's Inferno, Metal Gear Rising, Diablo 3) and didn't really stood outfrom the rest... plus a bad PS3-port, which wasn't helping.

If you have a Wii U and want a fast-paced and fun hack'n'slay-game, Bayonetta 2 will be the best option and should focus some sales, which would be spreaded between similar games on other systems.

Including Bayonetta 1 should help... it gives the buyers the good feeling to make a bargain. Nintendo as publisher with their big PR-budget and dedicated fan base should help, too.

1 million units should be no problem in the long run.

It's not an arguement and it doesn't matter if it's circular. It's the truth.

You can declare it to be "the truth" as much as you like, but you're not convincing anybody but yourself with it.

I won't have to "convince" anyone when it sells like every other Wii U game not from Nintendo.

I could see myself getting it if I got a Wii U. Only 3 games on that system interest me so far. And, it's going to be a while before i get a Wii U.
