Forums - Sony Discussion - Lair vs Killzone 2

Cross posting from the Corporate Spin thread that linked to this one, since it's more relevant here anyways....

Who actually bases hope of a generational victory on Killzone 2? I haven't seen anything remotely like that actually said by anyone. Sure, lots of people expect it to be great and some of the fanboys expect it to be better than Halo or Gears (or Resistance or Uncharted, for that matter)... but that's just fanboys for you.

Everything I've seen on gameplay mechanics, art, implementation, everything... has made Killzone 2 look like a quality title. True, the original was kinda shite (a combination of hardware limitations and Guerilla getting their feet wet), but Guerilla proved that they know how to make a quality game with Killzone Liberation on the PSP and everyone who's seen it in motion and had a gameplay demonstration has come away drooling over it.

I don't think silence on the title means anything negative at all. I think it means that Guerilla has taken all the time they care to at this point to show off the title and are busy finishing it. We'll likely see the hype train start rolling when new previews come out and a release date is nailed down.

Seriously, a better comparison would be Lair and Too Human. Thats another bomb in the making if the initial reactions are to be believed.

Though it's kind of a lame thread i'll bite to simply say no one will ever know how a game will turn out. All you can do is guess so maybe it'll flop maybe it'll go gold or hit 1mil or maybe blow every one away and hit 2 or 3M. Basing kz2's success on anything that happened with lair just sound ridiculous to me.

A few days ago I posted a thread that contained links to Killzone 2 screenshots that I believed were new.  I was quickly shot down by a number of people that said the shots had been seen many months ago.  However upon discovering this I realised something, I haven't heard Sony talk about Killzone 2 in quite a while.

Now many of you may say 'so what?'  And so I answer you with another question.  What was the last game that was exclusive to the PS3 that Sony hyped beyond belief, claiming it was going to show off the PS3's power and revolutionise gaming and then suddenly STOPPED talking about?  The answer, Lair...

I fully anticipated hearing a lot about Killzone 2 from Sony at GDC.  Many rightly point out that whilst many announcments are made at GDC's (GeoW2), they are primarily developer-based technical showcases.  However given Killzone 2's position as a graphical standard bearer for the PS3, I expected a strong showing from Sony this year.

To see if there was anything to collaborate the 'Lair-like' elusiveness of Killzone 2, I thought back through recent gaming news and went searching.  What I found were Surfer Girl rumours of Killzone 2's gameplay mediocrity, news of budget blowouts, rumours of complaints from Insomniac over Guerilla Games inefficiency and other industry websites claiming they are hearing that Killzone 2's gameplay doesn't set it apart from the genre's Turok's and Blacksite's and other mid-range to mediocre shooters.

I present none of this with the pretence that it is fact, I recognise that this is almost entirely speculation and adding together little bits of information that may not fit together in the end.  But I note that whilst Surfer Girl may be the first to make most of these claims, noone in the know has come out to correct her.  As the blogger in one of the links below points out, the first Killzone was missing something and if the parallels with Lair are a reality, Killzone 2 is as well......

Latest estimates have Killzone 2 costing $60 million.

Please don't deliberately deceive people.

Killzone 2 started out with the BEST reactions that are now followed by relative silence and rumours of mediocrity.

Too human started out as vaporware that was then panned when shown and has since progressively received better and better reactions to the point it is now highly anticipated.

Exactly, they're only rumors. Everything that has actually been seen and played by journalists has been received quite favorably.

Also, read my earlier post. There is a reason GG is staying relatively silent.

I've never understood this line of reasoning. Consoles don't sell without games. If every developer delayed their games while waiting for the install base to get bigger, it would never grow, because there would be no games. Even worse, the developers would be losing money by sitting on a relatively finished product.

People had been using this same line of reasoning for why MGS4 was delayed at the end of last year, that the install base was too small, but it made no sense, and Konami's president Fumiaki Tanaka recently came out with his own estimates for MGS4, that are precisely in line with my views on the matter. The userbase will rise when the games come, and not before.

Nikkei pointed out to Tanaka that the PS3 hardware has yet to hit the two million mark in Japan, to which Tanaka noted that many users are waiting for MGS4 to buy a PS3. He also feels that because a number of major PS3 titles from other companies will be released before MGS4, the system's userbase total will rise.

I'm still hoping that Too Human will be good.
