Polls always sucks.

Proxy voters. Kinda like viewbots on youtube and twitch, meaning fake votes by those with an agenda.

So I'd say MK8's numbers, considering everything that has gone on with Wii U in the last year and a half, has to be considered more impressive. |
The size of install bases doesn't matter. Its attach ratio to only the PS4 install base it's bigger than MK, so just considering the PS4 version it already beated MK8 numbers by a decent margin. The X1 version even with the smaller base still got a better attach ratio. Of course, it was made by the AC guys and its GTA-like (something that even can be a problem, since people may prefer to just stay with GTA5), but MK is a big franchise that sold 30M on its last iteration. It should sell more than a new IP. Even considering what is happening the Wii U (something that ins't that important, since GC versions of Nintendo popular games sold well), the X1 isn't doing that great too and both consoles are with small install bases since they launched recently.
About hype, it just shows that Ubisoft was competent when advertising their product. A decent game with big advertising will sell more than the best game off all time without marketing. Any company that releases their best games without advertising is doing a serious mistake. In september we will have Destiny. Activision announced they were expeding 500M on this game. We can assume that 350M+ will go to marketing. This game, this guy will sell like hotcakes and definitively dwarf WD.
Mario kart was more impressive because it launched with huge numbers even though it's not a front loaded IP. it should outsell watch dogs in the long run.
WD of course. It's a new IP that probably sold 2mln just on PS4 (attach rate=25%). It also had a lot of negativity around it for the downgrade thing. MK8, on the other hand, is a very old IP that always had very good sales, so we can say that its result was to be expected. Let's admit that WiiU owners basically bought the console only because they're nintendo fans, so they obviously love mario and zelda. It would be strange for MK to sell less than 20% of the WiiU install base.

WD is a new franchise, you can't tell if it will be front loaded yet. I think too that MK could show longer legs, but it's too early to tell for sure.
A curious thing about WD, BTW: some people that were too hyped about it ended up being a little disappointed, I wasn't hyped at all and when I watched people playing it I found it a decent and amusing game (although nothing to call home about). I found particularly amusing watching a little girl playing it, she was at most 8 and she was talking with her dad with a gentle and flutelike voice while she was ruthlessly ramming a police car sending it to crash on a lamppost!
