I appreciate your numbers but I'm not sure if it's me being silly or if it's the other way around.

The reason is that investing in the development of a new console will only increase SG&A costs.

If what you're saying is true, the solution to their losses right now is to reduce their overheads and increase their sales.

To increase their sales, they need to increase their software output. To increase the lifespan of a console is equivalent to support the console with games over a longer period, hence increasing potential profit while reducing overheads.

Well, the numbers as I can see are very bleak.  There could be a lot of details overlooked, but basically it's a big doo doo both in terms of being able to invest in a new console, and in terms of increasing software output.

Reducing costs means make many Nintendo employees redundant, cut marketing, cut contracts.  Not exacly good for increasing software output and sales.

I still think though that they must invest in a future console anyway, unless they don't have an idea how to be more successful in that market again.

If you're loving MK8 imagine MK9 on the next gen with sexier graphics 60fps on 4 player split

In 2003 Mario Kart had 60fps split screen, Mario Kart 8 has only 30fps because Nintendo didn't care, not because WiiU isn't powerfull enough to do it.

Double Dash had FAR smaller, less complex track designs and character models, running at FAR lower graphical fidelities. It's not even a comparison. I appreciate what you're trying to say about Wii U being able to do 60fps splitscreen. Who knows, maybe you're right. But that doesn't mean Nintendo dropped the framerate in 3/4 player because they "didn't care". MK8 happens to be one of the best looking games of this entire new generation so far, on FAR weaker hardware than PS4. And it still plays great, even IN multiplayer.

Hahaha, no. The next home console will be out by 2016. The Wii U will have a 4 year lifespan, perhaps being supported while the next gen console is out.

No offense, but you really have to love how some of you say these kinds of things matter-of-factly, as if you really do know. You don't. None of us do.

You may well be right. But you might also be wrong.

If you care for Nintendo's future, you'd realize just how bad of an idea letting Wii U ride for 10 years. Even 5 years is pushing it. No way can Nintendo sit idly on their hands with a system that barely sells for years with no 3rd party support. It'll drive them into further irrelevancy as their games slowly lose selling power due to the rise of more popular games and game systems.

Console transitions have more to do that just upping power and performance.

Guys, your 'Nintendo consoles lifespan was short before' isn't valid, cause times changing. Think about it not from a game geek point of view, but from a business position/customers point of view. Think out of 'usual lifespan' box.

That's where it makes the least sense of all.  Wii U still isn't making money, Iwata's accounting magic doesn't change that; unless things turn around drastically and suddenly starting with mk8 it would be fiscally irresponsible to support the Wii U beyond a normal life cycle.

If Nintendo wants to go bankrupt then sure.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

So much negativity to Nintendo lately... It seems weird, like somebody afraid that they can make a turnaround and piss into fanboys dreams of Sony domination...
And on the topic - in 2 years we'll see how this will turn out.

When does it start?

No. 5-6 year lifespan? Maybe. PS3 will have 10+. I think PS4 will end up with 12+. The lifespans are increasing as 'progress' per generation slows. However, Wii U is still essentially PS3/X360 level tech. This gen games are significantly inferior on the Wii U. This cannot continue for 10 years.

At some point Nintendo, given how short their gens are, needs to bite the bullet and release 'mid' stream and do a Wii U 2 in the middle of the gen. They can catch up in tech, cheaply, and potentially get 3rd party games on par with the competition for the 2nd half of the gen.
