Forums - Microsoft - external hdd improves x1 loading time

Really wasn't bothered too much with the load times in the Uncharted games.  With GT5 I did the optional partial install which helped the load times a bit and if I get GT6 I will probably get the digital version since the game isn't too big.  Also I forgot the initial instal on MGS4 was a bit bothersome but that is only a one time deal.

both awesome and kind of sad. the console architeques so obviously did't give gaming a high priority in their design.

What? Please go into more detail what you mean.

does this really need explination?  if an external HDD can improve ryse load times by 16 seconds then obviously the HDD they choose to sell you as part of the xbox one purchases from the store wasn't choosen with a high priority on making games load fast.    it's great that you can see this kind of improvement,.. it's ridiculous that you have to buy another hardrive and dangle 1 more thing off of your "ONE" box in order to get the kind of fast start up speed inherent in all ps4s.

Yes, it does. The HDD in PS4 is as bad as any cheap 500GB HDD. And there are other reasons why a system disk is slower than an external drive...

So faster hard drives are actually faster?

I'm still picking up chucks of my brain off the floor.

I've been a huge Xbox guy since day one ( or if you feel like adding up all the days before the original Xbox released in the fall of 2001, than I've been a huge Xbox guy since day 'that number')

but... who really wants an external hard drive anymore, especially after two generations that already had replaceable, integrated drives.
Again, what are they thinking??

I wrote a long, rather wordy block of text of text on this about a week ago, then deleted it before posting because I got aggravated.
These guys at MS have done absolutely NOTHING right this time around.
From the name, to the drm reveal, to the constant 180's that absolutely scream, 'please buy me', the Kinect... the only thing they've actually done right is dumping that fool Mattrick and letting him escape with a little dignity by not announcing they canned his ass.
External HDD.
wow!!

You do realize it is exactly the same on the PS4 right?

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Goodnews for XB1 owners!

To bad all these next gen consoles basically require us to re-invest in a quality Hard Drive. I'd rather buy a next gen console with NO HARD DRIVE included and pay a lower price. Take the savings and buy at least a 1TB to start.

@kitler53

Both the x1 and ps4 have a sata2 connection so the loading times are going to be comparable, cpu and hard drive speed determine loading (not gpu), obsurd to thing its inherent in a ps4 when the limiting factor is a sata2 connection.

The reason its faster is simple:

Sata2 = 3gb/s

Usb 3.0 = 5gb/s

Sata 3 = 6Gb/s

If you plugged a usb3.0 hdd into a ps4 you would see the same gains.

Youre response was biased and ignorant.

It's mind boggling.

I had to make several calls to my company which was  looking to increase our storage speed. I told them to get faster drives and I swear I heard a few blown minds over the telephone.

Agreed that would be the best option for both consoles.  But first the X1 needs a redesign so its easy to acess the area where the HDD is supposed to go, its already super easy on the PS4.

I had full install for mine GT5, but even like 20s for reloading the course was bothersome when I was squezing my best to shave off 0.01s to get the gold and have been trying 100's of times in like 2-3h of the same fase.
