Forums - Microsoft - external hdd improves x1 loading time

This just makes the addition of external drive support that much better. I'm just glad MS has finally put it in. I'll definitely be transferring my files to an external drive (was going to already for the convenience).

Good job Microsoft lol

It isn't about greater disk speed improving read speed is just about letting people know of it. And is strange to have protocol for faster connection on the outside and slower inside.

As per the spec sheet the PS4 also has SATA2 connection for it's internal drive.

both awesome and kind of sad. the console architeques so obviously did't give gaming a high priority in their design.

What? Please go into more detail what you mean.

does this really need explination?  if an external HDD can improve ryse load times by 16 seconds then obviously the HDD they choose to sell you as part of the xbox one purchases from the store wasn't choosen with a high priority on making games load fast.    it's great that you can see this kind of improvement,.. it's ridiculous that you have to buy another hardrive and dangle 1 more thing off of your "ONE" box in order to get the kind of fast start up speed inherent in all ps4s.

Can't wait for SSD's to get cheaper, that will really boost loading speeds! Oh wait you can't replace the hard drive of the XOne... why again was that Microsoft? I got it with the initial X360, because they wanted to make money on the hard drives. But now?

Really now? The external storage support is there to allow you to EXPAND your storage. That you also get better load times with FASTER drives is no different at all than getting better load times from installing a faster drive on your PS4. And when you REPLACE your PS4 HDD you are LOSING 500GB because it's a replacement, not an ADDITION. They both have pros and cons.

You don't lose 500GB if you install something bigger than 500GB. If I install a 2TB drive I get an extra 1.5TB. Yes I can't use the drive they gave me but who cares it's 500GB. I'd much rather have this setup then some external drive sitting on my TV stand that would be annoying.

Exactly what I mean. You install a 2TB HDD but you are only effectively adding only 1.5TB - And then there is the limit of 2.5" drives. What's the biggest HDD to can add to your PS4? Also, taking the drive to a friends house for instant plug and play without having to wait for installation is a bonus. And you can tuck the HDD away with the rear USB 3.0 port. Like I said, pros and cons.

I don't see how that would be annoying.

Well if hdd speed is limited in ps4 you won't improve speed, Just storage upgrade, at least ps4 is already smoking fast.

It's annoying for a couple of reasons. It's extra mess I don't want to have around I like keeping my media center clean. More power cables because if I were to get an external drive I might as well go 3TB+. Would probably have to get an extra surge protector just to plug it in honestly.
