Ha, it's funny to see Kaká and Ronaldinho Gaúcho on that pic. They were never that good with the national team. Yes, Ronaldinho won the 2002 WC, but when he was on his peak... what a disaster it was (2006).

Penalties still has a team element to it. It's individual in skill/composure and turn-based, but the point system is collective. So if you miss your shot, your keeper/teammates can still bail you out by saving and making their shots. Your team can still win despite your mistake.
Even when it gets to the sudden death stage, it's not individual because all that has transpired before has culminated to that point. The progression is as a team effort.
There was a pompous sports analyst on 1050am here in Canada who was arguing about penalties being individual. His arrogance got me so enraged I wanted to call in and tell the fucker off.

Mertesacker is too slow. I think Germany is anticipating Argentinian counterattacks. And I doubt Argentina will try too much of their luck with aerial attacks as the German defense is well equipped for that anyway.
Howedes is fine. The formations are never static. Germany rotates well and has the most versatile team. He has help from khedira, schwein to block any attempts to cut in and if need be, Lahm will rotate with him. I doubt Messi wants to go full on the wing on his right foot.
Hoep Di Maria plays because he's the only other player on Argentina that will give Germany problems with his pace and dribbling.

I think the 3rd place game is incredibly stupid and should be scrapped. 3rd place should instead be based on goal difference between the teams who lost in the semi finals.
