one thing to note is compared to N64/GC, the Wii U is doing alright in Europe and Japan, its America that Wii U is severely underperforming compared to Nintendo's other poor selling consoles. They need to make something that appeals to America since it has traditionally been Nintendo's biggest market by far.

Or more that GameCube sold like a turd in Europe/Japan, so Wii U just seems to be matching that, whereas the Wii U has just added selling very badly in North America to the mix as well.
