I actually kind of agree with your other points, though. From the looks of things, Nintendo's first party output this gen actually will be less than it was for the GC, and third party support is already even more dismal than GC's as well. I still can't understand how Ninty could launch the Gamecube at such a ridiculously low price without taking major losses. Whatever their secret was, they clearly forgot it with the Wii U - they're definitely asking for a lot of dough for what you get. |
- Four face buttons CHECK
- Two analogue sticks CHECK
- DPad CHECK
- Shoulder buttons CHECK
It was not far from standard. The ONLY difference was that it had only 3 shoulder buttons versus 4 on PS2 and XBox. Just cause the buttons are shaped a little differently doesn't change the nuber of inputs and where they are located at all.

I think of the Gamecube controller as a semi-standard.
It had 4 face buttons, but their placement and size weren't the standard set by the SNES.
It had one analog stick and one analog camera-stick, two different shapes and not the standard.
The D-Pad was tiny and not suitable for 2D platformers or Fighters.
The clickable analog shoulder triggers were better than the standard at the time, but the 3rd Z trigger was oddly placed.
Overall the GC controller was good but the Wii U gampad resembles more of what an industry standard controller looks & feels like (besides the big touch screen in the middle).
