well i guess they can fail long term,it is a tricky business after all
i find it interesting that they are spanning gens and not just concentrating on gen 8 with a long term strategy,

That $500 million is an investment in the franchise. I don't think Activision expects to make it all back with 1 game, there is going to be a sequel even if it sells mediocrely.
Now, with that said, I don't think that this game is going to sell as well as they expect
Platinums: Red Dead Redemption, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Terminator Salvation, Uncharted 1, inFamous Second Son, Rocket League
It will sell a lot of games I'm sure, being cross gen and all that. But Activision went a bit cuckoo putting $500 million into it so it won't make profit for Acti. The big question is whether Acti are expecting Destiny to make profit, or whether they are choosing to put huge effort into the launch of a new franchise to try to ensure the next 3 or 4 Destiny games are huge profit makers with only needing a fairly small marketing budget; the game will sell itself.
So you can't judge commercial success or failure unless you know Acti's KPIs for the game.
“The fundamental cause of the trouble is that in the modern world the stupid are cocksure while the intelligent are full of doubt.” - Bertrand Russell
"When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace."
Jimi Hendrix
I disagree I think it will be a massive commercial success..
It is the most pre-ordered new ip in gaming history. I think it will be Activision's new COD.

The game is coming out on 360 and PS3 aswell right? It will sell really well i'm sure. At least 3 millions.
I think so. After reading Kotakus first impression, the game looks boring and borrows from different games but doesn't innovate on its own significantly.
Also the $500 million budget only tells me they want to cover their bases and allow the marketing to compensate for any lacking meta score.
