Forums - Nintendo - Why is everyone so complacent with Pokemon XY?

I thought it was a big step up from Black and White, I had a lot of fun with the game. Only things I would like to see Game Freak add is a difficulty option and multiple save slots. I hate losing my main character just because I want to start fresh and go on a nuzlocke run. And the main game is still ridiculously easy. I get that they want everyone to enjoy it, but I don't see why they can't add multiple difficulties. Kids can still play on easy, while the vets can take on hard mode with smarter AI and tougher battles.

like I said, I love XY, but some people are trying to say they are the best games in the series, when they are clearly some of the worst.

Agree, XY is good but nowhere near the heights of Gen I-IV. Same with BW.

Yep.

Well you and I have completely different opinions. I think D/P/Pt are the worst, while B/W (2) are the best. The story was a million times better, the battles were faster, and I cared about the characters. HG/SS are the pinnacle in terms of aesthetics, and B/W (2) in any other aspect.
Now, XY is amazing. The pace and timing was so good, it didn't feel I was always doing the same. But it is not the best. I believe that GameFreak tried like a new beginning, to bring back the old time fans. That's why the 1st gen pokemon had mega-evolutions, and didn't bring many new pokemon. And they also want to have more competitive players, so they concentrated more on mechanichs.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

Having only 1 save slot is the dumbest shit ever. I really fucking hate that.

I don't get it. Is it supposed to stop people from sharing their games? What about the people that want to have multiple playthroughs. It really is the greediest and dumbest thing ever.

I also agree on the difficulty. I want good AI. I want opponents that actually predict what I'd do and switch and stuff like that.

Now with XY, we still get that very incremental sense of progression. I'm going to just flat out say it. 1.Why doesn't the game look like Dragon Quest 8? Why are we still using this ancient grid based overhead system? 2.Why is the character costumization so primitive? 3.Why are there only 80 something new Pokemon? 4.Why do you keep taking away great features like the seasons and Pokemon following you? 5.Why is the story so bad as opposed to the prior standard of servicable? 6.Why isn't there finally voice acting? 7.Why are Pokemon fans so okay with this game??

1. I never played DQ8, but if by complaining about overhead system you mean by that when you walk around in the world you'd rather see the camera behind you more like a 3rd person instead of seeing the world overhead then I totaly disagree with you. The only time the camera in the game is 3rd person is in Lumiose city and a few caves and I hated it, made me eager to get out of these areas.

2. I don't care much about this. Sure there is a few questionnable choices like you being forced to wear a hat and that their is alot of choices but these choices are really the same cloths in different colors. As cloths go I think you'r being to harsh, but as far as creating you character at the start of the game I understand how you can feel cheated as a black guy.

3. I don't care about the number of pokémons. Alot of ppl complain that their is to many pokémons so adding fewer this time around feels reasonable. I'd be fine if every generations would add a similar number. Also the addition of Fairy type and Mega evolutions turned old pokémons into completely new pokémons in a sense that they are now used in ways they were never used before. My only complaints would be the legendarys. I felt that past game added way to many legendarys (like a whooping 10 in B/W), and that made them feel less special. I think gen1 and 2 had the perfect amount, like 4 or 5. Gen 6 only has 3 new legendary. Don't get me wrong, I'm fine with that number since it's way closer to the number in gen1and2, BUT Zygarde must be w/o a doubt the lamest worst final legendary in history of pokémon. He is so dull and lame and I can't believe that guy is the final legendary in the game, way to end with a flat... Xerneas and Yveltall are great tho, but the bottom line is that their is 2new good legendary and 1super lame one, but out of the two new legendary you can only use one so that makes 1 new legendary for us to use and that is disapointing.

4. Probably the way the world look now fully 3D would be way harder to make it totaly change depending on the seasons. While in previous games all it required is to change a few sprites. I honestly don't know but I don't care much. Tell yourself this, X/Y is a different continent as previous games, so maybe this continent is placed somewhere where it can't have 4seasons...

5. Your only complain I 100% agree with you. Team flare was a joke, with all their fashion talk, they looked like clowns. Impossible to take seriously as a bunch of villains and their involvement in the game was kinda minor compared to previous teams (altho I'm not complaining cause they were so lame, the less we see them the better). We also never really discovered the secret behind mega evolutions wich was a big deal during the game... And don't get me started on the Rival. I like my rival to be cocky and feel like he is always one step in front of me (making me defeat him feel even better), instead we get that amateur chick that is all about friendship and stuffs... And instead of taunting you she says stuffs like ''oh, I hope and will be as good as you someday''... 'Your are so good at pokémon battling, I'm so happy to have you as a rival''... ''No matter who wins we will always be friends''... She was pretty much the only one between the two of us who considered us rival, I saw her as that annoying chick who kept getting in my way. The other guys were also lame but I don't care since they were not my real rivals, but would have felt good if you saw them more often and if they made it feel like rivals. For example, if I toke Froakie, one would take Chespin, that one would be the evil cocky rival and the other one who toke Fennekin would be the dull rival that is all about friendship and unicorns... All three of us could move on our different quests and we would occasionaly meet eachother, at times I would meet the bad rival, other times it would be the good rival giving a sense of unpredicability.

Oh, and finaly the story that was all about friendship the whole game made me feel like I was playing a saturday morning cartoon show and made me embarassed as a full grown man. But I have to admit that the end when that giant dude finally reunited with his Flabébé was touching somehow.

6. I don't want voice acting in my pokémon. This game being all about friendship already felt to much like a kiddy cartoon, and that was with written text, now imagine with kiddy voice actors hired cause they have kid friendly voices. I'm not sure if I could go thru this game w/o shooting a bullet into my head. But if you mean voice acting for the pokémons instead of the loud noises they do, I'm all for it, but I read somewhere that Pikachu was the only one cause he is the only pokémon whos name and sound are identical in every language. So you would had to put a voice to every 700+ pokémon in every 10+ different languages.

7. Like many ppl said, graphics. I hate to say it since I find ppl who are all about graphics obnoxious but graphics are what convinced me to jump back into pokémon. Made the world feel way more alive. Also the super training made it finally easy to train your pokémons the way you want instead of that old EV training that was discouraging for many (including myself). The online also feels great when it comes to trading and battling. And finally, your complaints are for the most part to harsh and would bother only a minority of players. Personally only your complaint about the story affected me and I'm sure alot of ppl was fine with it. Overall it's a great pokémon game since what matters for many is the post game (by that I mean completing your pokedex and making your competive team to face other players, not the post game adventure wich was really lame in X/Y, get Zygarde in one cave, mewtwo in a other cave and that's it, when I think of it I should add this to my complaints)

Because at the end of the day, a good game is a good game. With all its flaws, the fact is Pokémon is still a charming and addicting game to play.

Sometimes the sum of the parts does not equal the end result in gaming. There are games that are pretty good in the sum of the parts but fail to be a fulfilling experience.

Agree with you, except I felt like this after D/P.

It's still selling extremely well. I wouldn't expect Nintendo to change course until the series comes down in sales significantly.

I often have this issue with Nintendo games in general. Except in the case of direct sequels, which are pretty uncommon, there is so much tinkering with things that were already working. Little actually seems to get refined from iteration to iteration.

Zelda is a prime example. Each game, the framework is often the same, but the technical minutiae is practically built from the ground up. Very little work is done to refine things that could use some extra attention, like the Story (which has standouts, but it ultimately wildly inconsistent in quality), or the combat (which radically changes with each game to accommodate a new control scheme).

I believe in honesty, civility, generosity, practicality, and impartiality.

The reason why the behind the back section looked so bad was because they were in a game that was built from the ground up to look good at only one angle. I hated those sections too, because they looked retarded, in the same way that I would hate Dragon Quest 8 if it was overhead. It would look retarded. What I'm saying is that the whole game should have been built to look like DQ8, in that the towns look like towns instead of lego cities, and the people look like people instead of chibi characters. Power isn't the issue because DQ8 is on the PS2, and the 3DS is as powerful as that. That's why I used DQ8 as my example instead of something like Xenoblade, which is on more powerful hardware.

Well I do. I hate having to dress identical to every other guy playing XY because the clothing selection is so bad. I'm not being too harsh. If they aren't going to put the effort into an adequet customization tool, then don't add customization. Games have been doing character customization for years. If they aren't going to take it seriously, then they deserve every bit of criticism they get for it.

3. I don't care about the number of pokémons. Alot of ppl complain that their is to many pokémons so adding fewer this time around feels reasonable. Again, I do. When XY came out. So many of my complaints would be more easily forgiven if we had more Pokemon. A lot of people aren't true Pokemon fans. The entire spirit of Pokemon comes from the discovery of loads of new Pokemon with every new generation. The even gens usually have less than the odd gens, but this is unacceptable. My only saving grace for this is that XY is hinting that there may be another region this generation, and if that's true, it may have the "rest" of the new pokemon. I'd be fine with that. The new type excuse is stupid. It's just a type change.

As for the legendary Pokemon thing, I like a lot of legendaries. To me, it's up to the player to make legendary Pokemon special by using what the games give you. I equate legendary Pokemon to mythological creatures and deities. I like legendary Pokemon for their mythos and what they add to the lore of the region. Oh, and there are 6 legendaries, not 3. And Zygarde is cool.

That's not true at all. And the second part makes no sense. Kalos is based on France. France has seasons. That's that.

I don't really mind if your rival isn't a dick, as long as they aren't annoying. I loved Barry because he was likable and grew throughout the game without changing who he was. Honestly, even the whole "rival" concept is a bit dated. Just give me a Pokemon and put me on a journey.

6. I don't want voice acting in my pokémon. What does voice acting have anything to do with friendship or a "kiddy cartoon?" You can always mute the voice acting. And no, I don't mean voice acting for the Pokemon. I'd hate that. I hate Pikachu's voice in XY.

7. Like many ppl said, graphics. I hate to say it since I find ppl who are all about graphics obnoxious but graphics are what convinced me to jump back into pokémon. There's a difference between being "all about graphics" and wanting a standard. Pokemon is not up to par with what it should be, graphically. No one is asking for 1080p 60fps, but what they give us isn't what Pokemon deserves. Again, I used DQ8 as my example because it's a turn based JRPG running on hardware similar in power. The fact that DQ8 looks better isn't acceptable. Pokemon XY could and should look that good, and it doesn't because of Gamefreak's phylosophy of selling a cheaper product for more profit. It's far more time and money to make a game like DQ8, and so they didn't do it.

Comments in bold.

I didn't agree at first about the gym leader idea you had. But then I thought some more and it is so obviously an insanely good idea.

Make the RPG Pokemon play more like an RPG. Genius.
