Forums - Gaming - Molyneux: Kinect “Feels More and More Like a Joke"

Kinect can be very frustrating at times, in the middle of playing Titanfall and trying to record 5 minutes or even 30 seconds can be a pain. It doesn't understand or pick up what I am saying and sometimes while I am speaking to a friend it seems to throw me to an option screen and disables my characters controls. I thought it was my sorround sound but I turned volume all the way down and it took five tries before it understood me.

Sometimes the Kinect works great though and when it does it absolutely is fantastic. If ms fixes the few bugs it has it will be a great device for voice commands. I stay away from the gaming aspect of kinect though, I don't like to use it for gaming at all.

Molyneux was the talk of the town a few years ago when he was doing Fable. Surprise surprise, Xbox fans no longer like him, looks like MS is not the only one who does 180's.

I'm not sure many thought he was a great bloke, they may have admired his enthusiasm or his games.

But anyhow, people aren't allowed to change their opinions now?

He is clearly seeking attention, he is rubbishing everything he has ever done.  He is acting in a very odd way... seem to be wanting to be viewed as some kind of victim.

HEY! I've hated Phil ever since he said single player games don't sell!

So...Hah!

My son and I sit there saying random things at it, and it doesn’t work.

What are those random things he and his son are saying?

I'm sure he is talking about the Xbox commands.

You never know... It is Molyneux after all.

"Xbox...Help me make a good game"

"XBOX PLS HALP!!"

A bitter old man that nobody cares about any more. I guess that can be hard to take.

He is flat out lying in this.

"saying random things and it doesn't work" erm... well yeah of course, its not human Peter.

He really is scrabbling around for attention now isn't he.

To be honest what he said is pretty obvious and it has been to anyone who is not an industry "insider" for quite a while, now that reknown industry people are saying it out loud more and more often only means that as a whole the business side is catching up to the customers...

Motion controls in general are a joke. Especially when they're implemented the way Kinect is in Kinect-only games. It's like a suped up version of 90s television game show Nick Arcade: screen moves, gamer flails around while onscreen character awkwardly mimics. The only sort of games I can see Kinect actually working well in are boxing and golf games.

Of course he is. After all, Kowenicki just told us..

Did you check your posting history before posting this? I'm pretty sure if we go back in time and dig out some old threads about the first Kinect presentation, we will find enough Kowenicki posts praising Kinect and Molyneux as the ultimate gift to mankind.

why so much defense for kinect?
Its yet to prove it self after all these years. Molyneux may be questioning its bundling situation, but I question its existance.
It hasnt improved any gameplay mechanic in any genre. All its done is reduce accuracy of human input, and make developers add extra assists to their games. Depending on how the assists are implemented, the games are either too frustrating or too easy.

Secondly, voice command has been done for many years before kinect, that is also an add-on which hasnt proved itself. Its a cool oncept when you see how slick it can be in films, but in real life it never works that well and thats why software companies are not even trying and consumers are not interested in it, not only for gaming but for general use as well on computers and mobiles. Siri is also a joke and so is google voice search since the average input time compared to technology like swype is much faster.

Rebrand Kinect as Project Natal, sell it separately with a year of XBL, but don't stack it so that if someone already has a year of XBL they won't get another year in typical MS fashion. Nobody will complain ;).

Molyneux says it like it is! Funny that someone who was once regarded highly by the MS fanbase is now considered a bitter old man for expressing his opinion. Just wow.

In the end this is his opinion.

I think that including Kinect in every box was the biggest mistake, and to keep the price enough competitive, MS opted for a more complex and weak piece of hardware. That was a huge mistake.  After 360, I was expecting a far better console from MS! 360 was the most powerful console ever for the year it was released, a balanced piece of hardware and friendly to develop for, a true JEWEL !   Now look at Xbone.... really a disappointing machine, and for what ? To have this Kinect included in every box..... I'm speechle ss. Hope MS have learnt a lesson with this, as Sony learnt the lesson with PS3.
