That does come off as an attention grabbing sound bite, but it's hard to disagree, at least with respect to Kinect on the XB360. I don't see that ever changing given the waning status of the platform either.
As for the XB1, the updated hardware has higher potential for achieving what Project Natal promised years ago. In all fairness, the platform is barely over 4 months old and while a launch title that justified the required purchase would probably have gone a long way in legitimizing the concept of Kinect, until we see that title, the primary function of Kinect is not in the motion sensing camera, but in the microphone array used for the voice recognition software which is something that would work with any microphone including the one on a headset.
The Kinect free SKU all depends upon MS' willingness to continue to change their original vision for the platform. As soon as you have any percentage of an installed user base without a camera/mic, MS either has to make their use optional, or require an extra $150 purchase (for the separate Kinect 2.0 purchase) for certain functions. The other options are continue to sell their lower consumer demand package for more than the PS4, or match price, take a loss and essentially give away Kinect to XB1 buyers.
