Forums - Gaming - Is handheld gaming becoming pointless?

I prefer playing JRPGs on handhelds, so IMO, absolutely no.
For me I'd rather Nintendo focus solely on handhelds, since I feel they are superior, but to each their own.

Handheld consoles have always played home to home console version (GB was on par with the NES, just monochrome, GameGear was a Master System, Nomad was a Mega Drive/Genesis etc.), apart from the point where Nintendo completely dominated the market after the original Game Boy and so held back the GBA tech due to having no need to progress, something which wasn't really addressed until Sony released the PSP, hand held gaming has always been about "console" games.

I don't really get the thread, is it meant to be, should handheld games be exclusive releases?

I spend up a lot of time commuting to and from work, I want to enjoy full gaming experiences. I think it's absolutely fantastic that I can enjoy games of such high quality on the move. I had a 4 hour train journey today, that was completely demolished by being engrossed in FFX. PS2 and PS3 versions could not have done that, and that is why I love high quality software on handheld systems.

As for mobile phone games, meh, don't know why anyone would want to waste their time on 99% of those games with such better options available. I guess it just shows that the "real" games market always was a lot smaller than people believed.

Handhelds have become home to the middleground that got wiped out on home consoles due to piss poor visions of console manufacturers and third parties alike. So if you want games that are neither overengineered (and focus-tested to hell and back) nor underdeveloped, handhelds are the place to look.

It sounds like you're describing indie games.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

Call me crazy, but I actually prefer playing "big and meaty" games like RPGs and SRPGs on handhelds.

Me too!

I just love the sleepmode of my vita.

I am playing all the older Final Fantasy games on my Vita. Finished 9 and 7 and I am now playing 8. Im also gonna pick up X/X2 on Vita once I finished FF8

No, he's not. He's describing the B-Tier that was a staple in previous generations of gaming. He's also actually absolutely spot on.

They're the middle ground between indies and AAA games, they have a bigger budget for more technically accomplished titles, but the budget is also not such a gamble, that they can afford to take gambles on new gameplay concepts etc.

Both yes and no. Is handheld gaming becoming pointless/obsolete? Yes, with phones offering quick pick-up-and-play gaming handheld gaming is in a tough spot. BUT, it doesn't have to be like that. Handheld can still be a very relevant platform; like Rol said in a few posts above: "Handhelds have become home to the middleground", but that can only be achieved if portable gaming offers a different experience from smartdevices and home consoles. And therein lies the tricky part.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

I'm sorry, but what a silly notion. So long as there are gamers who want to/enjoy taking their games on the go, which you cannot do with your home consoles, then there will be a market for portable systems. That's about as absurd as saying home consoles are becoming pointless. So long as gamers enjoy relaxing on their couch or in their bed, IE in the comfort of their home, and playing their games on a TV, often-times a large-screen TV.....yeah, there's going to be a market for that too.

not because of it offering home consoles experiences. it is a good thing about handhelds(make some chosse 3DS over wii U, for example)

phones and tablets are the problem.

It seems that handheld games are just becoming console games on a handheld. Where as I used to get a completely different experience from my GBA to my PS1 or N64, now most of the best games on Vita/3DS may as well be on a console. Look at Mario Kart 7, it's just a console Mario Kart on a handheld. I don't see why Pokemon XY can't be on the WiiU. Vita has this problem too, it's main selling point was console gaming on the go. Well I don't play handhelds on the go, at least I haven't since I was a kid. I can't play my 3DS when I'm driving a car or at my job. The other selling point for a Vita is indies, most of which are available on other systems anyways.

I'm not saying the 3DS and Vita have poor libraries, well maybe the Vita, but they don't offer different enough experiences. The 3D effect on the 3DS was completely worthless, and the touchscreen on the Vita was nothing more than a gimmick. The DS used to have games like Brain Age and Picross, that was a handheld experience that differentiated itself to what was being offered on consoles at the same time.

As much as I hate to admit it, I think the best handheld experience out there is on smartphones. You get to play fun minigames that are over in short bursts, perfect for when you have a few minutes to spare. There's a ton of creative games out there that make cool use of features on your phone. There's also the fact that you don't look silly when playing games on a phone in public in comparison to pulling out a Vita.

I think they are and I agree with everything in your post. I still have a 3ds that I haven't played in months and I'm probably going to get rid of it. none of them have that killer game that you can only get on the handhelds.
