Forums - Gaming - Facebook buys Oculus Rift for $2 billion

Mark just announced focus is currently on core game market and that with Facebooks money they are speeding up how fast it will be in gamers hands.

Holy shit I bet we will have a consumer model this year now. YES!!!!!!!

i doubt it.  having lived through and acquisition there will be a lot of setbacks in the short term as the chaos of the acquisition sets in.  a lot of key leadership will leave as the guys who love startups move on to the next big thing.  The workers will have tons of interuptions with new health plans, new 401ks, and meetings upon meetings upon meetings to talk things out.

long term this will accelerate things but being march already i highly doubt they can be market ready this year.   2015.

It is good for VR in general since we need companies behind it who can convince people that this is something for them and if there is a company who can do it is is Facebook, Apple or Google.

Not sure if it is good for Oculus since I have no clue which weird stuff I don't want will come with a Oculus owned by Facebook but now we are much closer to a success and support by gaming developers.

For Sony it can be good and bad. If Facebook helps to make VR a success Sony will have it easier to sell it as something for everyone and not for super nerds but otherwise they have someone as competition who could beat them but I think a general push for VR won't be bad for Sony

They're going to revolutionize the way you browse Facebook.

Actually its very possible as Oculus has already said consumer model is nearly finished and had a potentially Q1 2015 release

Well this was unexpected, why buy VR when you are in the social business?? Text chats via VR?

VR can easily be a social tool.

To get easily destroyed by Google Glass's AR. The only people who would where VR helmets on their head are gamers and techies. This acquisition only makes sense if their going into Gaming because AR is a lot more practical then VR in the social realm.

Oculus Rift + Facebook + steam machine VS Project Morpheus + PSN + PS4. Which has mass market appeal?

The real money of VR does not lie in gaming. Sony would be amiss if they left out the casual markets- that don't purchase gaming consoles. (As well as the sciences, and wherever else VR is applicable).

Yeah people dont realize how massive things like VR tourism, VR cross country or international meetings, etc are going to be.

If done right VR has the potential to change everything.

I agree with you.

It´s quite funny how hasty some people are in ruling out VR.

"This will not take off", "will share the same fate as 3D glasses", etc..

This thing is a whole different level.

Sony, your table is ready.

Well said. I'm just waiting for other companies, like Samsung and Microsoft, to reveal their own devices. But at this point: Facebook vs. Sony ... yeah it can end pretty badly.
