in a word: infamous.

Well even though you may not like it, it defined the console in many more ways than Halo did with Xbox, (insert best PS franchise) did with PS etc.

The thread title is: "why would you buy a new console at launch".

In other words this thread has nothing to do with the casuals and the blue ocean or novelty. If you want to compare Wii Sports to Super Mario 64 and Halo then I don't think I can communicate with you.

Well I answered that too, but I'll admit that the Wii Sports comment was a little off topic. I'll add that I bought the Wii for Super Mario Galaxy, after the Wii was around 3-4 months old. I'm not comparing Wii Sports to SM64 or Halo (hell no), but they do have one thing in common; they're launch titles. And launch titles are important.

And well, Halo may have defined the console FPS we know and love today, but did it really define the Xbox? I don't know, I can't answer that, I'm not the most hardcore Xbox gamer you'll find... And SM64 defined the 3D platformer, but I guess it could also be done on other consoles (PS1) at the time... Don't shoot me if I'm wrong, I'm not a techie.

Wii Sports isn't half of those games, hell not even a hundredth of them. But it did define the Wii because of the controls. That's why at least 80 million copies of it exists around the world. But yeah, SM64 and Halo is a thousand times better, end of off topic rant.

Wow.

I really don't know how to respond to you as it doesn't seem like you're interested in following a structured conversation. I have no idea what type of point you are trying to make, but I do know that the one point you make definitively:

" I'll add that I bought the Wii for Super Mario Galaxy, after the Wii was around 3-4 months old."

Is just plain wrong.

But I won't shoot you :)

Cause the first versions are the easiest to hack in the long run

Sorry, it's just my bad English... Some of my sentences gets formed badly, probably like this one :/

In that sentence you highlighted, I meant that I got the Wii in March 2007, when the Wii was 3-4 months old. I bought it primarily to play Galaxy later that year.

I realize now that I put in too many unrelated points in a post, but what I meant in many of my points, is just that Wii Sports was a very good killer app to bring in new audiences, since it was so easily understandable to everyone.

Hope that made a little more sense to you..

Yep.

I use the PS4 as a media player. Ironically most of the functions still aren't available though. But that was the reason why I got it. Plus, I had $400 available now.

SNES & Mega Drive: never bought them, could play on them at a friend's house or lend them for a few weeks

PS1 & N64: bought them both together in 1996 with two friends, so everyone had only to pay a third of each console and we swapped them around. Eventually both consoles ended in my possession when my friends lost interest in them... so it was a good deal ;)

GameBoy Color: finally wanted a handheld for vacations, never had the monochrome model, the colored games were the tipping point

PS2: never bought it, could play on it at a friend's house or lend it for a few weeks

GBA: skipped it, still had enough older GBC titles to play

GBA SP: loved the new clamshell format (better pocketable and protected display when closed) and the frontlighted LCD screen.

GameCube: the GBA SP came with a voucher, that reduced the already low GC-price for another €50. It was bundled with Metroid Prime, the next games were Super Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker and Resident Evil Zero

Xbox: got it very late (2004), but couldn't resist the nice crystal edition... bought it for Fable, Silent Hill 2, Halo 2, Burnout 3, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath, Jade Empire and some others

DS: skipped it, was more hyped for the more powerful and versatile (games, movies, music) PSP

PSP: got it 5 months before EU-launch as import from Canada for a great price (€150, so €100 less than if I had waited), fell in love with that handheld ;) Started with Ridge Racer, Tiger Woods and Untold Legends, many other (and better) PSP-games followed

360: my first day1-console, loved that Europe hadn't to wait as usual. Had impressive launch titles (Condemned, PGR3, Kameo, King Kong), which smoked my €1500-PC

Wii: my second day1-console, wanted to play Twilight Princess, Wii Sports and Rayman Raving Rabbids

PS3: I intended to wait, but a few month after EU-launch i got an offer I couldn't refuse: I got it practically for free as part of a mobile phone contract. First games: Resistance, Heavenly Sword, R&C: Tools of Destruction and Uncharted

DS lite: the DSi was already available, but the lite-model was much cheaper and I wanted the GBA compatibility. Fell in love with the Ace Attorney and Layton series and the Cing-games (Hotel Dusk, Last Window)

3DS: skipped the first model, most 3DS-titles in the first year didn't appeal to me anyways

PS Vita: day1-purchase together with Rayman Origins and a discounted Escape Plan. I also had preordered Uncharted: Golden Abyss, but I won that great game together with Little Deviants and Modnation Racers in a contest. WipeOut 2048 was another freebie, so despite the steep hardware price it was well worth it... I absolutely adore that device!

3DS XL: day1-purchase together with Super Mario 3D Land, Professor Layton 5 and New Super Mario Bros. 2... most things I didn't like of the first 3DS-model were fixed: bigger screens, enhanced battery life, more comfortable to hold and the redesigned chassis

Wii U: got it 2 months ago for Super Mario 3D Worlds and DK Tropical, the slashed price was okay. Also got Nintendo Land and Zombi U, next will be Bayonetta 2 or Mario Kart 8, I also have to catch up on Lego City Undercover, Pikmin 3 and Wind Waker HD

PS4: day1-purchase, but sold it through, which financed my Killzone-PS4-bundle with camera and second DS4... these extras are also sold, which lowers my investment to a point, that waiting would have made no sense at all. Killzone: Shadow Fall is the only retail game I've played yet, but I had already great fun with the monthly PS+ titles and remote play... inFamous: Second Son should arrive any day and DriveClub is preordered for €20 (special offer for my day1-purchase)

XBO: I will eventually get it for exclusives, but that can wait one or two years

Back in the day: To play awesome launch titles like Mario World and Mario 64.

Nowadays: To play "awesome" launch titles like Knack and Ryse.

Did you  spot the difference, guys?

For PS4, cross-gen games were enough to blow me away. Metal Gear Solid V in particular.

You usually get a console day 1 because

#4 you have to much money and are to bad of a person to donate something to the poor
#3 you like to look at things instead of using them
#2 you are a "gambler" you like risks and therefore you want to be a guinea pig for unrealiable hardware
#1 you want to feel cool by doing the same thing other people do. Things that are IN right now.

#Bonus you like to call yourself a gamer but just own 1-10 games on your old system you ignore the great library of the old console or its competition on purpose because you love to play mainstream games only.
(Alot of people I know did this "oh cool Fifa on PS4. I have to pay a fee for online and I have to buy a new system for it but it looks 1% better compared to the PS3 version LETS DO IT!")
