I'm not arguing with you - but could you link the part saying any cards that run mantle will run dx12 ? I didn't get to see the whole presentation so I've still not sure how much hardware is needed for dx12 etc.

Though from the sounds of it, dx12 is unique. All previous dx versions have brought in new features eg procdural rendering, tesselation etc. If this is just a performance boost then meh, my PC already trashes consoles so this will be a waste of time for PC folks =/

If Nvidia can get DX 12 support ALL THE WAY BACK TO FERMI GPUs then I'm sure AMD can at the VERY LEAST SUPPORT DX 12 with their GCN GPUs which support mantle.

DX 12 is not something new. It's practically a consolization of directx for the PC space for more access to GPUs. AFAIK it doesn't require new features from a GPU such as DX 11 enforcing tessellators to be on GPUs.

This will have very little effect on Xbox One games, as consoles already have incredibly low level access.

PC however will see some pretty incredible gains from this if it delivers how they advertised it.

steam box killer?

Actually yes this is quite a huge blow to Valves whole Steambox / Steam OS gameplan. One of the big selling points of Steam OS was essentially turning PC's into a console like environment to take strain off of hardware.  DX12 is doing exactly that and looking at some of the slides on how it optimizes across CPU cores and actually can free up GPU processing I don't see too much reason to ever have Steam OS.  And I LOVE me some Steam.

Honestly I'm pretty confused why Steam is even doing the whole Steam OS / Steambox gameplan. It really makes very little sense.

I'm with you there too.  It's sort of like making people buy new cars to go on new freeways because you don't like the current ones.  Come travel on our steam powered freeways they cry!  But we already have more that will go to all sorts of places, the people respond.  But ours are somehow different?  But the people respond, I can by ones that can travel for games, but also be used for other things, I think those are better.

Another thing this will do keep DirectX 12 as a lead platform.  So companies can still develop and use their years of experiences on DirectX for Xbox, Tablet and PC (even phone if they want.)  While SteamOS will have to work hard to try to get people to switch to their new platform.

As far as Xbox One, I’m sure we will see some improvements.  Just look at the development of Xbox 360 launch games, to the ones today.  They look a generation better.  Even a modest improvement would be good.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

The steambox is one of the most WORTHLESS and STUPID ideas from Valve. I could not be more fucking dissappointed in them than I am right now.

Just what is that POS aimed for ? I would rather be bound to windows than to have not have a shit ton of games. It is MICROSOFT that set standards for PC gaming and they have done more with Directx than what valve EVER will with their steambox.

I think SteamOS it Gabe's dream of killing Microsoft and Windows.  Why, I really have no idea, as his consumer have more of the latest software from Microsoft than the general public by twice.

Perhapse Bill Gates stepped on his foot once, or ate his cupcake. It really seems silly and a waste of time, espically with the new DX12 coming.

If they had put the same effort into new games we might have Half Live 3 or Portal 3.

But hate is a passion, like love, it's not rational.

Well anyway most people will make their steam box dual boot anyway... And I hardly see why PC gamers would buy one...

I might get one if they do cheap ones just to play Indies that don't make it to consoles...

Once again the PS4 doesn't use DX 12. Any GPUs that can support mantle will also support DX 12 so it pretty much makes mantle irrelevant for the most part. I see absolutely NO REASON why game engines won't support DX 12. The PS4 could also support DX 12 but microsoft won't let them hence why Sony created a custom API in the first place.

There is no new god damned features in directx 12. It just exposes more parts that are in existing GPUs. I don't see why the PS4 can't support DX 12 for technical reasons.

DX 12 works on any modern era GPU.

Fermi, Kepler, and Maxwell. Basically if you're playing any modern games on PC your GPU will support DX12.

I noticed that and was wondering if that was due to Nvidias architecture or if it was not hardware bound for the first time.

I'm watching a liveblog of it now. This is going to really boost the Xbox One.

How will it do that?

They say DX12 is a console like API.  XB1 is already a console.  If it has a boost it would only be because their current SDK is bad.

Nah, it's not like that.  Think of it as like a super optimizing driver.  Only it will give you one platform that does what Steam wants their new OS to do, but with the years of experiences that developers have working on DirectX. It's like a new OS.

Xbox One should get at least a 20% GPU improvement according to what we saw today.  Perhaps significantly greater.

Unreal Engine 4 will get upgraded to work with DirectX 12.

It will be the new standard for is flexibility, scalability and power.  PC and Xbox One games will both benefit.

I'm shocked to see all the Steam OS hate in here. Honestly, Valve's Linux push was like a godsend for me. Linux gaming has exploded since steam first landed. Two years ago the only game I played in Linux was Teeworlds, but now I have 40 native Linux titles. There are even Cryengine and Unreal games Linux bound now. Things are finally looking up.

OT: Mantle, DX12, and OpenGL14. It's great to see this sudden, massive push to improve PC game performance. Makes me think that just maybe my dream of going 6 years without upgrading anything besides my GPU will actually be realised.

It's not hate, it's just a dream, that will never come true... Or at least in the near future or not with valve.... Linux user base hasn't moved a bit in forever it oscillates at the bottom between 1 and 2%.... And steam OS won't change that... Most people won't use Linux... And most gamers either...

I didn't see info that imply 20% or more GPU improvement.  Any good links?

DX12 is more of a CPU cost reduction than a GPU improvement from what I could tell.
