An investment is not a failure if it doesn't produce immediate returns. The 360 introduced ads into XBL, turned standards such as hdds into accesories. If you want to talk about failures, the Dreamcast was a failure. The Xbox lost money but if it truly failed then why would Microsoft of all people release the Xbox 360, Hope? Without the Xbox, the Xbox 360 would've flopped hard, to ignore the effect of the gamecube or the xbox on the industry is to ignore reality. That is not total failure.

It did FAIL. Microsoft created the xbox 360 in HOPE of it achieving better results and they were partly lucky in that regard since Sony screwed up royally. Both the xbox and gamecube were irrelevant on it's affect to the industry. How can you claim that the original xbox ISN'T a failure when it was a loser in every aspect ? Both the original xbox and the gamecube had NO influence to the future.

Last generation was a fluke, the effect of a fad that not only does not have a precesdent but has yet to be replicated. Its not just about profits and loses.

The fact that you claim the WII to be a fad must mean that you need to educate yourself on what that term means because you really don't what a fad is.

How much market share did the Xbox have before it released?

How is this relevant ?

Do you realize the failure in your reasoning, suggesting that because it didn't meet your arbitrary standards it was a failure?

What arbritrary standards ?! It's a simple fact that both gamecube and original xbox were failures and there is nothing you or the stigmatized gaming community can do to change that.

Perhaps you have insider information about Nintendo and Xbox, with statements from them suggesting such.

Forgive me, I'm going to reduce you claims to the most basic of terms.

The fact that you claim the WII to be a fad must mean that you need to educate yourself on what that term means because you really don't what a fad is.  = fad is any form of behavior that develops among a large population and is collectively followed enthusiastically for a period of time, generally as a result of the behavior being perceived as popular by one's peers or being deemed "cool" by social media.[1] A fad is said to "catch on" when the number of people adopting it begins to increase rapidly. The behavior will normally fade quickly once the perception of novelty is gone.[1]

Not only has Nintendo failed to reproduce the Wii's success, its clearly evident that it started to fade as HW production and Software production basically floundered in 2010.

How much market share did the Xbox have before it released?

How is this relevant ? = Its relevant because they went from zero consumers to 20 million+ off the Xbox alone, 2-3 years late in a generation while being the most costly. In contrast, the Xbox 360 only did about 4 times as well as that despite having a year advantage over the competition, being the cheapest of the consoles competing for the hardcore, and utilizing the infrastructure of the Xbox. But ofc, the 360 failed in relation to the PS2.

What arbritrary standards ?! It's a simple fact that both gamecube and original xbox were failures and there is nothing you or the stigmatized gaming community can do to change that. = yes, because a subjective assessment about these consoles sales in relation to the ps2 is more factual than an objective assestment pertaining to what these consoles actually did. Profitable =/= Failure, that is truly objective. After the Xbox, every single console had online and an hdd, that is objective, verifiyable, and factual. If the Xbox and GC didn't have an effect on the industry, the PS3 would've resembled the Wii, and the 360 would've resembled the PS2, if it even came into existence.

Apparently, hope is all a company needs to break into the console industry.

I'm sorry this: Microsoft created the xbox 360 in HOPE of it achieving better results is one of the most hilarious claims I have ever seen. I'm sure you can link me to the list of Microsoft's hopes and dreams because you seem to be aware that this company especially an american one, makes decisions solely on a wish and a prayer.

It did but your too young to realize it since you where still in elementary school when it got released and you live on the wrong side of the pond, probably in some small village where most things seem irrelavant.

WHAT IN THE HELL DOES IT HAVE TO DO WITH THE ORIGINAL POINT ?

The point is that the original XBox was nowhere near as big a failure as you think it was and it did a lot more for gaming then the Gamecube did which was available for two more years and still sold a good amount of less software and hardware.

I'm on the first page :(

The OG Xbox was not part of a duopoly. It barely had any market share.

It still had a lot more games in common with the PS2 then the Gamecube since it used the same type of media, despite being on the market two years less then the Gamecube.

You still have yet to prove to me that both gamecube and xbox weren't failures.

A fad doesn't last for 4 YEARS. The fact that you even claimed that the WII was a fad just goes to show how little credibility you have.

The fact that the original xbox did nothing but lose money just shows that it was a failure. Sales mean jack when you do nothing but lose money and the xbox division is STILL IN THE RED after all these years.

How exaclty are sales and profits subjective when the GC is a CLEAR DECLINE from the N64 and the original xbox did nothing but create LOSSES. You can make the same argument for the xbox 360 so there goes your fallacious line of thought and the WII and WII U was released after the xbox 360 yet it still had no HDD so you have nothing but a moot point. The GC and Xbox didn't even remotely RESEMBLE TO EITHER OF THE 7th gen consoles. Microsoft was going after a souped up PS2 (Xbox wasn't the ONLY one with online seeing as how the PS2 also had online and supported HDD's too.) and it ended well for them compared to Sony trying something so stupid as to create a non gaming focused console and as for the WII we all know it's totally different.

You need something more than hope such as microsoft's and Sony's desire to take over the living room.

The fact that the xbox divsion is still in red just goes to show you that companies still make irrational decisions.

Still doesn't make it a duopoly when total SW sales paled in comparison to PS2's and it most major 3rd party releases were exclusive or timed exclusive to PS2.

The fact that it was only four years in the market before being axed is testament to this, not a point in its favor.

@Bold LOL You expect me to believe this rubbish ? Xbox and GC were both big failures. End of story. It makes no difference if one console got dreamcast'd less than the other because they both got dreamcast'd in the end.

Selling 3 million more consoles than a pitiful competitor doesn't warrant a victory over another console. LMAO

What I mean is with Nintendo not appealing to core gamers the last two gens, what we have is a douopoly in the core market between MS and SONY. Not domination by one company like a monopoly, but two. The same as 360/PS3 last gen.

What this means is if one competitor falls too far behind, if it risks losing third party support, it's doomed. So, each company is certain to not let that happen, because it would mean certain death of their entire investment.

So I'd just caution those hoping Xbox somehow goes away, it's not going to happen. MS will cut the price to $199 if they needed too. Of course far less drastic measures will get it done, it's just to illustrate the point. Already you can see MS being aggressive with Titanfall marketing, Titanfall bundle, and Forza 5 pack in. But that's just the earliest beginning. People can crow how bad Xbox is being beaten, or that it's already dead...but it's March. MS will take their sweet time in the scheme of things. They might not cut to $399 until say, September. So people will say for March, April, May, etc that Xbox is D000med as the sale figures roll in...but it's meaningless, it's a short term view with no long term ramifications. It's no more doomed than when PS3 sold incredibly poorly in early 2006.

Another thing is people dont realize, even a healthy 2nd place just in the USA and UK is enough to gaurentee third party support. You dont even need to win those markets, just say do decently well in them. Xbox can do that with ease. Hell it is currently despite all the problems and a high price.

So, the point is the only "endgame" here is the loss of third party support, and in a douopoly of consoles, it's almost impossible to make that happen.

Dude if you want a hug to feel better just ask, no need to go around the houses with it.
