An investment is not a failure if it doesn't produce immediate returns. The 360 introduced ads into XBL, turned standards such as hdds into accesories. If you want to talk about failures, the Dreamcast was a failure. The Xbox lost money but if it truly failed then why would Microsoft of all people release the Xbox 360, Hope? Without the Xbox, the Xbox 360 would've flopped hard, to ignore the effect of the gamecube or the xbox on the industry is to ignore reality. That is not total failure.

It did FAIL. Microsoft created the xbox 360 in HOPE of it achieving better results and they were partly lucky in that regard since Sony screwed up royally. Both the xbox and gamecube were irrelevant on it's affect to the industry. How can you claim that the original xbox ISN'T a failure when it was a loser in every aspect ? Both the original xbox and the gamecube had NO influence to the future.

Last generation was a fluke, the effect of a fad that not only does not have a precesdent but has yet to be replicated. Its not just about profits and loses.

The fact that you claim the WII to be a fad must mean that you need to educate yourself on what that term means because you really don't what a fad is.

How much market share did the Xbox have before it released?

How is this relevant ?

Do you realize the failure in your reasoning, suggesting that because it didn't meet your arbitrary standards it was a failure?

What arbritrary standards ?! It's a simple fact that both gamecube and original xbox were failures and there is nothing you or the stigmatized gaming community can do to change that.

Perhaps you have insider information about Nintendo and Xbox, with statements from them suggesting such.

Forgive me, I'm going to reduce you claims to the most basic of terms.

It did FAIL. Microsoft created the xbox 360 in HOPE of it achieving better results and they were partly lucky in that regard since Sony screwed up royally. Both the original xbox and the gamecube had NO influence to the future.  = Delusion

The fact that you claim the WII to be a fad must mean that you need to educate yourself on what that term means because you really don't what a fad is.  = fad is any form of behavior that develops among a large population and is collectively followed enthusiastically for a period of time, generally as a result of the behavior being perceived as popular by one's peers or being deemed "cool" by social media.[1] A fad is said to "catch on" when the number of people adopting it begins to increase rapidly. The behavior will normally fade quickly once the perception of novelty is gone.[1]

Straight up plagarized from WikiPedia.

Not only has Nintendo failed to reproduce the Wii's success, its clearly evident that it started to fade as HW production and Software production basically floundered in 2010.

How much market share did the Xbox have before it released?

How is this relevant ? = Its relevant because they went from zero consumers to 20 million+ off the Xbox alone, 2-3 years late in a generation while being the most costly. In contrast, the Xbox 360 only did about 4 times as well as that despite having a year advantage over the competition, being the cheapest of the consoles competing for the hardcore, and utilizing the infrastructure of the Xbox. But ofc, the 360 failed in relation to the PS2.

What arbritrary standards ?! It's a simple fact that both gamecube and original xbox were failures and there is nothing you or the stigmatized gaming community can do to change that. = yes, because a subjective assessment about these consoles sales in relation to the ps2 is more factual than an objective assestment pertaining to what these consoles actually did. Profitable =/= Failure, that is truly objective. After the Xbox, every single console had online and an hdd, that is objective, verifiyable, and factual. If the Xbox and GC didn't have an effect on the industry, the PS3 would've resembled the Wii, and the 360 would've resembled the PS2, if it even came into existence.

Apparently, hope is all a company needs to break into the console industry.

I'm sorry this: Microsoft created the xbox 360 in HOPE of it achieving better results is one of the most hilarious claims I have ever seen. I'm sure you can link me to the list of Microsoft's hopes and dreams because you seem to be aware that this company especially an american one, makes decisions solely on a wish and a prayer.
