Forums - Nintendo - Would You Be Angry If Nintendo Released A New Console But Still Supported Wii U?

I would be angry, yes. While the Wii U is a piece of trash, it would look like a fantasticly conceived system in comparison to your proposal.

Don't worry they'll have a Quality of Life senior citizen/soccer mom health box for the types of games you seem to get excited about, so that's already covered. Those of us who want a good normal modern SNES style console (which is the majority of stable game console buying audience IMO) can have their flavor of ice cream, Wii U can be repositioned more a family/kids box (already trending this way anyhow).

Everyone gets what they want, Nintendo gets a wider audience to offer their games to and their dev teams are freed up of having to make 2 versions of every staple Nintendo IP, which opens the door to more Nintendo IPs getting a chance or more original IP being made.

Why don't you go with the alternative that is already reality? Buy a PS4 to play the games you want.

That's fine and dandy, though I would assume Nintendo still wants to be part of the console business, and honestly speaking since the X1 really hasn't taken off that quickly, there probably is a market a for a higher end traditional console here (especially one that has free online play) if Nintendo is willing to swallow some of their pride and simply just give Western third parties the box that they want and be content to sell some of their own games on said box.

It's better than the situation they are in with the Wii U currently and I have zero confidence they can repeat the Wii phenmenon any time soon, so both of those are kind of dead ends for them.

The QoL thing will let them squeeze a few extra bucks from whatever different audience is left while staying far away from the borders of Apple and Google with whom they absolutely cannot compete with.

If we're talking intercompatability, that would be awesome!

Why do all of these threads attempt to recreate Nintendo's console in the HD Twins image? We don't have a problem with architecture or terraflops, we have a problem with the audience. The "hardcore" gamers favor more testosterone based gameplay and the uber-casuals that gobbled up the Wii (and only WiiSports) have moved onto their phones/tablets.

This isn't much different from the rest of the world's entertainment choices. You'll always have blockbusters raking in the dough at theaters, and mindless romcoms grabbing the other extreme. In the middle you have a small opportunity for the movies that are actually trying to say something to at least capture their budgets back. Does that mean that the "art" medium of film is dead? Not at all, it just means that the people looking for a deeper experience are a more niche crowd. However, I'd say it is these niche movies that stand the test of time and continue to be heralded as classics.

Gaming is no different. Just because a game doesn't sell 20 million copies, doesn't mean it was bad. I'm looking at the entirety of the Metroid franchise here. So I don't think Nintendo has done anything "wrong" this generation, it's just that the audience is fixated on a formula. I know for a fact that tides will turn once again, as they always do in the gaming industry. Nintendo can weather this storm and the next. One day the audience will return, if but just for a short while.

And if Nintendo releases another platform to compete with the WiiU, I will be pissed because it will mean that they don't get any of this.

Very true!

The analogy with movies is a good one.

If you like Nintendo style of games you will have to suffer a lot (except during NES - SNES-era). There will allways be a lot of people that label you "kiddie", that complain about graphics, that complain about on-line, that complain about third-party support and more.

As a Nintendo fan you havt to suffer trough many of Nintendos stubborn and "stupid" decisions. But in the end you get many classic games and game improving inventions.

We will still have a Zelda U and a Animal Crossing U, and maybe a 3D Mario U. This will make Wii U live trough Christmas seasons of 2014 and 2015. Then it maybe will slowly fade out trough 2016 and if there still is any console market left in 2017 (I personaly do not belive there is) it will be replaced with something else

I honestly lost count on how many times you have changed the Nintendo strategy regarding the Wii U.

It can be a new model like DS XL but not a new generation like 3DS, because it would fracture the user base and the developer base. Even Nintendo would be hard pressed to adequately support both systems so one of them , probably the Wii U would get abandoned, and that would be a slap in the face of consumers and damage confidence in their products.
See Sega Dreamcast.

Nintendo's problem isn't hardware, its branding/reaching the consumer.

With the Wii they caught on to the Motion Gaming Fad and that brought it into the relevance of mainstream, but clearly that didn't happen this time and the Wii U is following the trend of declining relanvence with all Nintendo Consoles.

I would consider buying the new system but only if it can compete with PS4 hardware-wise and if Nintendo offers grown up games and 3rd party JRPG support. I decided to skip the Wii-U anyway since there is only one game of interest which is Xenoblade 2. I will not buy a system for just one game and after playing 3D Land and Link between Worlds I realised that I got too old for Mario and Zelda. I wish Nintendo would have grown up with me but currently it has nothing to offer for older gamers.

If I had a child getting into Kindergarten age, I would consider buying Nintendo again.

I wouldn't be that happy, seeing as that they haven't released games like Zelda and Metroid on the Wii U yet, and coming out with a new console would mean those kinds of games may never come out of the Wii U, as they would come to the (I assume) better selling new console. It would be a slap in the face to all the early Wii U adopters.

Do not worry, you are soon old enough to appreciate Nintendo again, more so if you plan on getting children.

And if you like JRPG try 3DS.

Short answer: I'll forgive a company of a lot when they can't pay their bills.

Long answer: What etecoon said.

I'll add that Nintendo is having trouble leveraging what should be their advantage as a vertical player. Their software doesn't do enough to take advantage of opportunities offered by Nintendo's hardware. Or perhaps those hardware opportunities simply aren't panning out in development.

Either way. Nintendo will never get ahead by becoming just another OEM for the major publishers, they need to offer unique value. Nintendo's hardware and software teams need to work more closely to craft new, unique experiences that rival hardware can't offer because they're chained to the PC-with-thumbsticks paradigm. This may lead to future failures, but the successes will be worth it.
