It can be a new model like DS XL but not a new generation like 3DS, because it would fracture the user base and the developer base. Even Nintendo would be hard pressed to adequately support both systems so one of them , probably the Wii U would get abandoned, and that would be a slap in the face of consumers and damage confidence in their products.

Nintendo's problem isn't hardware, its branding/reaching the consumer.
With the Wii they caught on to the Motion Gaming Fad and that brought it into the relevance of mainstream, but clearly that didn't happen this time and the Wii U is following the trend of declining relanvence with all Nintendo Consoles.
