Forums - Sony - Sony GDC 2014 - theory involving VR and Driveclub, am I reading too much into it here?

If I remember correctly, there was a thread about Driveclub using the VR headset right here in this forum, just a few days ago.

But anyway, there's this article for example:
http://www.pushsquare.com/news/2014/02/rumour_was_ps4_racer_driveclub_delayed_due_to_sonys_vr_headset

...which also claims that Sony will reveal their VR headset at GDC, and that Driveclub will indeed be the first game to use it.

I assume the rumours are correct, In my opinion it makes perfect sense.

I'm really wondering what the headset will be like when it comes to price and experience. I too assume current consoles to be too weak to deliver an experience on the same level as an Oculus Rift, but I believe it will still make the masses extremely excited.
It might even give the Xbox One the final death blow, as customers might perceive the PS4 as the only console providing a truly unique, innovative new experience/feature that everyone wants to try out. Similar to motion controls when the Wii came out.

Who knows, it just might be the shot in the arm console gaming needs in Japan.

I think this would appeal to Japanese gamers less than anyone.

How many first person games are big in japan?

Define "big".

Call of Duty on PS3 managed ~500k for a few titles, if I remember correctly.

Edit - And dont underestimate Japans love for weird, VR hentai videogames.

It would be dumb if consoles refuse to support Oculus rift.

Sony already has 2 VR headset. And I don't see why people are so excited about OR, it's not even VR IMO.

Sony has headsets but they're not motion detectors so you move your head around nothing happens.

OR on the other hand is VR.

I dont define any of those as big.

Japan is one small country. America is multiple big countries.

That's interesting. Everything fits.

They are aimed at 3d movies, not gaming.

They are also expensive and I wonder why people think this will be big based on that.  I cant see it being cheap, far from it.

I don't think it will be big based on that. But they are indeed interested in "VR" devices, and they clearly want to make hardware for it(and that's what they do best).

So they may go VR for gaming, we shall just wait and see.

(BTW, it's not VR, it's just hering and sight simulation, the only two senses used to appreciate movies, thus it seems more efficient for movies than gaming to me)

128m people?  10th largest in the world?

I wasn't the one saying Japan would make this big by the way.

A large percentage of them are really old, though. More so than any other country, but yeah it isn't "small".

Just out of curiosity: How exactly do you define VR, if you do not consider the upcoming Playstation headset and the Oculus Rift to be VR?

I agree that the 3D headsets that Sony released so far were definitely not VR devices, those were clearly only "3D viewers", their usefulness being limited to watching (non-interactive) movies.

But the Oculus Rift and the upcomfing Playstation headset are without a doubt VR devices in my opinion...

VR means virtual reality. It's about emulating your senses in an alternate reality (here, a game). Now, do you perceive reality just trough hearing and sight (and head movement) ?

These devices are just HSS (Hearing and sight simulator) IMO.

Well that is (and has been for decades) the current state of VR HMDs. It's not necessary for a single device to simulate ALL human senses to be considered a VR device.
