Forums - Sales - XBone outsells PS4 in both USA and UK

What will people say when the PS4 outsells the X One nearly every single week for the rest of 2014. After this minor boost fades and the PS4 stock is fulfilled. People say these stock issues are make believe.. yet almost anyone you talk to has a story about how their local Best Buy's or Game Stop's have no PS4's in stock, but they have tons of X Ones with an overwhelming amount of advertising for the X Box One and very small amount for the PS4. You walk in the store it's like a shrine of XOnes, even a huge stack of the consoles with a big sign on top saying XBox One's In Stock!! ... they were never out of stock... so it's slightly misleading. You ask about PS4 and they give you the story, "We are expecting a shipment on "insert day" do you have your pre order?" .. maybe then you can get one when the shipment comes in.. but you still gotta do a little work. It's not THAT hard to get one, but it's not simple either. It IS simple to get an XBox One. I live in the US and here in California the PS4 buzz is huge and the X Box crowd has shrank an incredible amount from last gen. If this all doesn't happen, you can quote me on it. But also when it does happen, you gotta quote me on that, too. (:

The thing which I would love to know is how many boxes are being produced in the factories......if the Xbox and PS4 production levels are largely similar but the xbox can only shift a fraction of consoles off the shelves.....how long can msft carry on overproducing before they can't their production numbers.

I'm no console fanboy and own a wii u, intend to buy ps4 in the near future and an xbox one too later when much cheaper.

The point I would make is the ps4 is a world console and will deliver a wider range of games from more diverse developers. It has already moved into pole position this generation and so developers know they have a viable platform to develop for. Not only that its the most powerful console of this generation. These two things together make a huge plus for the ps4. Developers love working with the best hardware and they have the commercial reasons to do so. This makes the ps4 the safe bet this generation. This is a message that isn't clearly understood by all consumers but its the undercurrent of what is happening this generation.

Can Microsoft fight back? Well in Europe its cleanly gone the ps4 route in mainland europe with only the UK really buying xbone in serious numbers. If you remove UK from the european figures the ps4 is massively dominating in mainland Europe. In Japan and most of asia we know xbone doesn't stand a chance. Can xbone survive as mainly a USA console I don't think so. Are Microsoft willing to go below PS4 pricing so they can fight back in Europe and dominate in the USA I'm not sure. The momentum currently is still very much with ps4 it the pricing ratio stays as is.

I actually think there's a good chance the PS4 numbers could drop like a rock in the next few months. The sales we are seeing right now are PS4 loyalists. Basically people on websites like this, but do you think everyone shares those feelings?

Answer me this, what is drawing the casual gamers to the PS4?

If your answer is graphics, then do you really think you will attract the large portion of casual gamers that Sony needs to support a graphics powerhouse like the PS4?

If the answer is one of the various PS4 gizmos, then do you think that gizmo is easy enough for casual gamers to figure out and use on masse. Keeping in mind that most casuals had to refer to the instruction manual just to figure out how the PS3 laser activated power button worked...

Well there's about 80 million of these non-casual loyalists, so arguably PS4 doesn't even need casuals to outsell Xb one by a pretty decent margin. After all PS3 was a failed console so it really only sold to the loyal PS fanbase, right? All the swing buyers and casuals went from PS2 to X360 and Wii. You don't think a substsantial number of the swing buyers will swing back to PS4? Other than a wish and a prayer there's no basis to think all those swing buyers will stay with Xbox, especially not with a less powerful and more expensive product. But Xb one wins the casual war. Great! I hope that goes well.

Also PS3 also >23 million at prices $399 and above (the real core fans). Xbox 360 dropped its Pro sku (that came with a HDD) below $399 after 360 had only sold <12 million units. So it seems there are possibly a great many willing buyers of PS4 at the $399 price point, and quite a bit fewer willing Xb one buyers even at $399, which it may or may not achieve in 2014.

We also know the mass market price point is $299. X360 had it's non-Kinect peak when the Pro sku hit $299. And we all know what PS3 did at $299. Unless there's a Kinectless sku, PS4 will almost certainly hit $299 before Xb one. Globally the generation is PS4's to lose. Xb one can only realistically compete in NA and UK

It took me a second to realize that you were talking about the numbers on the left, not the right.

Maybe Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare was just THAT GOOD? (I kid, I kid, yet It does look like lots of fun to play.)

And yes, without TitanFall. The next few weeks should be really interesting as we will have time with TitanFall. I can see the numbers on the right side flipping too.

Hey, as expected the PS4 had a great launch. But when things turn out to be not as reported, it's not going to help you. It's like that guy's gift, never celebrate too soon.

I hope you take your own advice.

You mean this one Below, Yes my gif shows exactly what can happen and what has happened many times. Four months in and we got people puffing on cigars. Your talking about a company that has many options at their finger tips. Before launch people where saying Xbox wouldn't hit a million sold for up to 3 months. LOL Xbox turned around a horrible Launch campaign and can easily turn around sales. $100 cut in the fall and people will be running to the store.

The only time I remember that happening is with PS3 vs. 360...and it took a very very long time. When did it happen before?

PS3 vs. 360 isn't even an example. The only reason 360 had a lead was because of the 1 year head start. PS3 outsold 360 nearly every year that both were on the market, which does not appear to be the case with PS4 vs Xb one. And finally that was a 2nd / 3rd competition, Wii still won the generation. So the situation is not comparable at all.

The only real examples are 360 vs Wii in USA and UK, and PS3 vs Wii in a handful of minor markets. And in the case of 360 vs. Wii it was because Wii sales died off rapidly. But on a global basis there are no examples of come from behind victories in the entire history of game consoles (i.e. taking #1 spot). At the 6 months after launch mark if one console has a clear lead then there is a high probability that console will win the generation. At least that's been the case over the last few generations.

People think Xb one can do a PS3. But 360 is only the 5th best selling console of all time, whereas PS2 was the best selling console of all time, by a huge margin. So the customer base for Xb one to work with is nothing like the customer base PS3 had to work with. OTOH Xb one may be headed for a PS3 like result in that it could be looking at about 50% of the sales of 360.

This also being $100 more. Once they match price, then what?

By the time the XB1 has a good price drop (like $100), Sony probably also will drop prize. Sony made the PS4 $399 to have a good price difference, they'll probably try to keep at least a $50 price difference for the whole gen.

Aweeeee, XB1 outsould PS4 by 4k combined in the USA and UK. How cute.

I think pricing is becoming a problem for the PS4, which is because of the stock shortages. GAME for example dont even show the PS4 for sale by itself and the cheapest bundles are watch dogs and infamous SS which are both pre-orders. The cheapest in stock bundles they have are priced at £459.99.

The 'problem' of MS is that they are the 1st to make a move because Sony is selling much more; MS is following behind, they are in trouble(in Europe), so whatever they do, Sony is watching them from the upper floors ready to make their move when it's better for them.  On the other hand, MS was forced to lower the price in UK losing money and also losing their face in front of everybody, with a price cut so early, after only 3 months and half from Launch.  People forget that also Sony can go with a price cut, but at the right time, without losing money like MS.

When you can actually buy a PS4 and peripherals in stores it's sales will increase again. It's probably more concerning for Microsoft that they're not decently outselling the PS4 right now in the UK.
