I look at the guide only for missable trophies though. Like lets say you have to be level 30 and buy all guns. I look at a guide especially if the game does not have chapter select or new game plus (darksiders)
Before starting. Its important to know if there are any missable trophies, glitched trophies, unobtainable trophies, or if servers are still working for online trophies.
But I never read the entire guide. Its a waste of time when the chances are that you will obtain most the trophies by just playing through the game.
I only check if there are any missables (trophy or collectibles) before I start a game and how long the platinum will take.
I use guides to compare my progress in rpg games and to get all the collectibles. For instance, in most rpg games a guide may tell you that you must be at a certain level to progress with less difficulty.

This.
After finish the game the fist time.
Except RPGs... in this case I look the missable trophies before start it.
Basically, I look at the trophy list and roadmap first and work out how much I can ignore it. Ideally, I will just play the game once, then come back and do my second playthrough with a guide to find all the collectibles. But I'm not so desperate for trophies that I'll ruin my experience to get them
For something like a jRPG, I always play with a guide, irrespective of trophies, I know I would miss out on so much if I didn't, at most I have played 1 or 2 in my life without a guide
I avoid looking at guides before i've played the game the first time. I do cycle through the trophies themselves before starting a game, on the console itself as there are no spoilers there, to see if there is a certain condition i have to meet beforehand!
I usually look for missable achievements before starting a game.
Then decide if I want to pursue them or not.
