Depends on what you mean by a guide ...

I usually check the roadmap on ps3trophies.org to see what I am getting into at least. Is a nice first step since they typically warn you about missable trophies and other difficult trophies that would require multiple playthroughs if you screw something up.

As far as physical strategy guides go, I mostly purchase them for their collector value now (hardcover versions etc). I almost never use them to help me with a game.

by guide I mean something you read or watch to see how to get it so more than just a physical guide, but more than just a list. So the roadmap you mention would count as a guide though its probably a good way to have a clue with minimal spoilers

its hard to imagine the serious trophy hunters with masses of platinums don't look at the roadmap first otherwise they might have to redo a whole game for one little thing, how much time can people have

I know for myself there have been games where I wish I had read the guide earlier (needing to replay a huge amount of the game for something small when I didn't even like the game that much, other times I have read a guide and it was too full of spoilers and I wish I hadn't read it.

they do spoil some games ,the roadmap/guides for sure but i assume if you really like the game/franchise/story then you would just play it,i'm only a third rate trophy humter so don't ruin much,it is fun doing them though

the big guys surely read the guides first though, there must be certain routines for your bog standrd stuff

Sometimes. Once I began a game with a guide that explained how to get all the achievements in 1 playthrough, and it completely ruined all the fun.

I usually look at the trophies before playing the game. Then I decide if I even want to platinum it.
If yes, the most important thing is finding out if there are missable trophies. If there are too many, I usually choose to play through the game once without looking at guides at all, then decide if I go for a 2nd run (if the game is fun enough) and then I usually look at a guide all the time (for missable collectibles).

If there are just a couple of spots where there are missable trophies I just try to get em in the 1st run. The non missable trophies I use to get after finishing the main story.

For example: I'll start playing South Park The Stick of Truth today. I saw there are a lot of missable trophies, and there aren't any 100% road maps out yet, so I'll play through it without bothering about trophies and then if I like the game enough for a 2nd playthrough I'll get a good road map and play along it till I get the plat.

Game of the year 2017 so far:

5. Resident Evil VII
4. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
3. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
2. Horizon Zero Dawn
1. Super Mario Odyssey

Depends on the game. I had too many games last generation, not just ones I loved.
Games I love and want to fully experience: never, unless there's an achievement with a weird description that doesn't make sense or if I believe I did what it told me to do a couple of times with a different approach each time without success.
Games I (might) like but that are not 100% my type: check the list for achievements/trophies that are missable and would require another playthrough so I only need to do it once.
Games I hate/suck at: get info on the quickest ways so I don't waste too much time, even if it's using a glitch or another person helping me.

Depends if I'm chasing down a platinum trophy or not. I only have four so far, so I guess I looked four times because it was the mass effect games and you need to plan those ones out because takes up to 5 play throughs to get each one.

I consider it sort of both a personal fail, and sometimes on the game developers if I have to look for a guide to finish the game. It's not sporting, and I didn't buy a game to walk through someone else's path.

If it's a silly thing, then I feel silly I didn't figure it out. But sometimes they are just mean game developers and just seems like I would never figure it out.

If I'm going for achievements and have played through already a time or two, I'll look for at a guide. Sometimes it's something like, 'look at the lady, turn, walk backwards, and find a chicken. Kick the chicken and it will leave a golden egg.' Stuff like that I have no idea how anyone ever figures it out.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Tell me a funny joke!
