Forums - Nintendo - Does anyone still think Mario Kart 8/Smash Bros. 4/Price Cuts/etc. will save Wii U? <(o_O<)

Wii U doomed to Gamecube-like sales?

Yep, sadly... 340 49.85%

No! Believe it! 340 49.85%

Total:680

I don't know why they have taken so long to bring them out. They are similar to the others they have made right? Unless they are making some major innovations they should have already been out in the market.

It will certainly help, but they just seem really late to market.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

I keep thinking that people overestimate Mario Kart. It will move units, but they won't make a difference in the long-term and it will be the worst selling MK ever.

Smash Bros, on the other hand. That might give WiiU a chance! :3

I don't know if you were just joking, but iirc, Mario Kart is always as big or bigger than Smash Bros. Seeing as Smash Bros. 4 is going multiplatform between 3DS and Wii U, I think it's safe to say that Mario Kart 8 is the Wii U's biggest system seller.

I don't see mario kart or smash bros selling more than 5-10 million lifetime. These games will increase sales, a bit, but they cannot possibly save the wiiu. 20 million wiiu buyers will not come from the 5 or so million that bought these games. Though the entirety of the library may, by including these games...

Smash will probably sell 10+ million, but only because of the 3DS version. :L

Killing the system really is the best decision. We live a world were you buy one or other when it comes to needs. Moblie is the future.

Yeah, but I was only thinking wiiu. 3ds version will do well on its own.

depends what you mean by ''save''

sure it won't get anywhere close to Ps4 unless something godly happens, but SSB and Mario Kart can help the WiiU get relatively relevant in sales compared to the other two, then maybe developers take it serious and something happens from there on

Save it from it's currently terrible sales of course! At it's current trajectory, it's gonna sell less than the Gamecube if kept on the market for the same duration.

Also, the Wii already taught us that install base alone doesn't garner serious developer support, but of course, not having an install base doesn't help either lolz.

If there is a price cut in time, then yes. Smash and Kart were the #1 and #2 biggest sellers on the Gamecube, respectively. They alone with add at least 10M Wii Us.

Also, if the price becomes low enough, then Nintendo can still try to market to the pseudocasuals (those are a just a little bit more gamer than the cazzys) and to the hardcore gamer, who might want a Wii U as a secondary console.

At the beginning of this gen, I thought the Wii U could do 50 million max... How wrong was I...
Anyway, I will say "Look at the 3DS" as an example. Yeah, it was selling waaaaay better than Wii U when it was selling bad (I think that made sense), but then MK came out and it skyrocketed!
I'm not saying Wii U will skyrocket, but it's sales will be, let's say, 1.5 better each week, or maybe even twice as much as before! But I don't think it will get past 30m LT.

It wasnt just Mario Kart that turned things around, it was cutting the base price by 1/3 plus Mario Kart, 3D Land and in Japan Monster Hunter followed up by a steady stream of quality software from that point forward.

Wii U would have needed the base price to be $199-249 along with 3D World+Mario Kart 8+Monster Hunter 4 during the holidays plus no more droughts in order to have a similar turnaround as 3DS.

Yes

I still believe they still have a chance of a turnaround (and pull up at least decent numbers) with this year's line up PLUS A PRICE CUT. Notice the emphasis on price cut here, as I believe that will be the key factor. If they have to release an alternative SKU without the Gamepad, then so be it.

I still don't understand why, out all companies, Nintendo is the more adamant about not selling hardware at a loss. I mean they have the software. The more units they put on the streets, the more people are gonna buy their games. So yes, I believe they can afford to lose a few bucks on every console to build an install base.

The Wii U is sold at a loss.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.
