Forums - Microsoft - Would Microsoft pull the plug?

I will start by saying I'm not trolling spewing doom or downplaying the good launch of Xbox One.

But if we go by NPD January 2014 numbers, X1 sold almost 1/2 of Ps4 and with all the push from some shareholders to kill consoles division and previous history from original Xbox cut of support we can say it isn't impossible for Ms to pull the plug. And since I doubt Sony would let them release nextbox a full year before Ps5 (that is if Sony don't sink before it) Ms won't be able to repeat the scenario of X360 sucess so maybe they could decide to kill the division if Xbox One bombs (in their metrics, not in the quality of the system or games)?

If you were to guess, in which scenario Ms would kill it's division? How many units sold in how long?

I predict that if Xbone fails to sell 30M LTD before 5y on the market they will leave the bussiness. Likewise if before this timeframe they drop to less than 3M a year it would also happen let's say year 3 it meets 30M and it's viable but start dropping fast and year 5 it sells 2M then I would say they may release a premature Xbox 360 Two.

I'd prefer they sell it to another company, not sure who tho, I think it's most safe under Microsoft.

Anyway, if XB1 is a disaster this entire gen they may very well pull the plug. Be interesting to see if they move their studios to PC or sell them off, if tey kept them they could have an actual competitor to Steam.

Nahhh X1 has plenty price cuts ahead of it, they will help greatly. It just costs to damn much, if you add Gold price and simple thing as controller rechargeable batteries. Add a game and you are nearing around 750.... way to fucking much.

And Sony can sink, PS will be fine.

I reckon the earliest time they might discontinue would be after its 2nd full Christmas. ie. after Xmas 2015.

I also think that it wouldn't be too hard for Microsoft to discontinue the Xbox. eg. If by the end of 2015, they were still losing money on the Xbox, INCLUDING software sales and 3rd party licensing and that Christmas hadn't seen a turnaround. Then I could see them halting production, selling through existing stock and only releasing games that they already had in development.

But I don't think that scenario is likely.

Have forgot this option. This could happen, and maybe if they do that they can sell extra studios slowly to make more buck of their investment.

And for the record I expect Xbone to sell at least 50M and have a sucessor.

They can't ditch it. It's the number 1 platform for promoting Bing. I can't see another company overtaking the gaming division either. Xbox needs the media and cloud network of MS.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

I would like to see that. But in reality this is not happening. Plus this gen has just started.

Who knows who cares?

Can't predict the future, we just know MS needs to make some price changes in the future to stimulate sales.

There are investors asking for Bing to be discontinuated as well. Not sure if that was a serious post, but would be funny to keep X1 for bing sucess.

That's exactly what you're doing...   It would be like me going into the Sony forum and asking "What if Sony started losing 2.5 billion a year for the next 7 years, would it be the end of the Playstation brand?"  Do you think that would even be worth discussing?

The system has only been on the market for 3 months and is selling faster than 360 did.  So why not at least wait to see if it actually runs into trouble before making threads with imaginary disaster scenarios.
