The Vita doesn't have as many games that appeal to North American gamers and the Xbox doesn't have as many games that appeal to Japanese gamers. That's really the crux of the matter.

At the time when the 360 came out, it had a slew of JRPGs Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia, Star Ocean, Magna Carta 2, Infinite Undiscovery and more that the PS3 did not have. But still the Japanese audience did not buy into the 360. MS did try at first, but then gave up after seeing their efforts fail.

The PS3 didn't have any games that the 360 didn't have?

Sony didn't support the vita well in USA and the few games they got didn't appral to the audience. At least MS tried in tJapan. Doesn't seem like the Japanese audience wanted a wester console. They're loyal to their own country.

Racism.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

First and foremost... is absolutely racism.

However, both platforms lacking games those regions care about is another issue.

The Xbox 360 saw a significant boost everytime it got a noteworthy exclusive in Japan. It just didn't get enough of them.

Sony is doing a terrible job at supporting the system with 1st party software after a decent launch. Another reason it basically became a handheld with more expensive smartphone games when looking at the recent game announcements.

When the first xbox launched in japan, japanese couldn't handle the pad (too big).

No idea for the vita tough.

I think the PS2, PS3 and PS4 have something to say about that. I believe lack of support and games.

Well, the Vita doesn't have enough games that appeal to your typical CoD/Madden fan  or that appeal to kids so that's  why it's not doing too well in America. The Xbox 360 actually did OK when it had many exclusive JRPGs, but MS said "fuck that" and the 360 started dropping like a rock in Japan.

Yeah, no shit. But hypothetically, if MS bought more support their sales would have been a lot better. However, Japan is a relatively small market and not worth buying many exclusives for.

Sony dominates Japan and doesn't really make noteworthy games for them.

Don't know about Vita in the US but for 360 in Japan the answer is very simple :

(damn, even today by viewing those boxarts I still feel that huge relief)
