Don't know about Vita in the US but for 360 in Japan the answer is very simple :

(damn, even today by viewing those boxarts I still feel that huge relief)

I got both of those games on 360!

Yes but why own a 360 in Japan when PS3 also got them aswell as much much much more. If MS could have kept them exclusive and continued with exclusives like this for the entire generation they could have grown a lot. Not going to say they would beat PS3 but a large growth goes well and gives them trust in the next console.

The Vita doesn't have as many games that appeal to North American gamers and the Xbox doesn't have as many games that appeal to Japanese gamers. That's really the crux of the matter.

At the time when the 360 came out, it had a slew of JRPGs Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia, Star Ocean, Magna Carta 2, Infinite Undiscovery and more that the PS3 did not have. But still the Japanese audience did not buy into the 360. MS did try at first, but then gave up after seeing their efforts fail.

The PS3 didn't have any games that the 360 didn't have?

At the time many of those games came out in Japan, they were only available on 360 and not on PS3. So MS did give incentive for the Japanese gamers to pick up the 360.

No, that's not what I'm saying.  Microsoft, for various reasons, had a lot of trouble in Japan, including missing out on some games that Playstation got.  They also flubbed with that controller, which the Japanese hated.  They had PR and image problems.  They pissed off Japanese publishers by trying to do business with western methods.  Lots of factors added up to the Xbox brand being scorned.  Microsoft bought a few exclusives and missed out on dozens more.

The 'racism' thing always cracks me up, though, when there are hundreds of western brands doing very well in Japan.  There are like a thousand KFC restaurants there, yet they won't have anything to do with non-Japanese brands?  Hah.

Yeah your right about those brands doing well but, just cannot dismiss that notion altogether. It depends on if a Japanese company makes something simliar, like for instance I never heard of a Japanese chicken resturant so that's maybe why KFC does well there. Also look at Apple, most Japanese made phones are not that great and Apple has the biggest market share there.

It was kinda obvious that no matter what M$ did or what kind of games they offered, Japan was never going to give them a chance.  It was never even an option.  X-Play even did segment where they went to Japan for the Xbox 360 launch (I've been looking for it for YEARS on Youtube because it was hilarious) where they asked people if they would buy the 360.  One guy said "I would buy the 360 if it was called Playstation 3".  Another guy was obviously laughing and saying "Yes" when asked if he would consider buying a 360 and the translation was an angry "NO".

Microsoft gave it a valiant effort trying to get a foothold in Japan with games that never even got US releases but when the public doen't want what you're selling, you can dump more money into a failed cause or  you can move on.

Why does the Xbox do so bad in Japan? It's because the Xbox is filled with shooters, and Japan doesn't really enjoy shooters as much as Final Fantasy, Monster Hunter etc

I wish I could classify your comment in street terms but I would get a stupid ban.

MS got exclusives made exclusively for Japan. Not 1, not 2 in a space of 2 years.
