If MS could have kept them exclusive and continued with exclusives like this for the entire generation they could have grown a lot. It was kinda obvious that no matter what M$ did or what kind of games they offered, Japan was never going to give them a chance. It was never even an option. X-Play even did segment where they went to Japan for the Xbox 360 launch (I've been looking for it for YEARS on Youtube because it was hilarious) where they asked people if they would buy the 360. One guy said "I would buy the 360 if it was called Playstation 3". Another guy was obviously laughing and saying "Yes" when asked if he would consider buying a 360 and the translation was an angry "NO".
Microsoft gave it a valiant effort trying to get a foothold in Japan with games that never even got US releases but when the public doen't want what you're selling, you can dump more money into a failed cause or you can move on.
