my thoughts would be

"why the fuck? when did you become as greedy as the other guys? I mean they whine about not being able to have free online because it costs to much but in fact they just want more money and it has nothing to do with not being able to keep the service free of charge.

They would allow people to play with friends on player hosted servers if that would be the case but instead the whole industry decided to drop player hosted servers in favor of allegedly expensive official servers so they can charge you and so they have control over the servers and they can shut them down in case the new installment comes out. They just want money and want to force you to buy the next game in the series. If the companies would be fair they would allow everyone to play with people in their friendlist and especially let people host their own servers and keep the fee for whoever feels the new to compare dick sizes in tournaments etc. FUN SERVERS = FREE and TOURNAMENT SERVERS = FEE"

MS started that shit because way to much money seems to be not enough money in their opinion.

And Sony copy pastad them and somewhat does it even worse because they learned how addictive MMORPGs are and use the same psycho shit for their PS+. Give people something and let its pseudo value increase. Give them more and more stuff every month so they feel punished when they stop being a member. The longer you are a member and the more "free rented" games you have in your PS+ collection the harder it will be to stop being a PS+ member because the punishment gets worse every month this month you lose access to 20 games next month its already 25.

Same happens with mmorpgs that have a fee. The longer you play the worse your punishment is when you stop playing because you think "oh man I already payed so much money when I quit NOW all of it would be wasted" so people feel forced to be a member even longer until they realize that they made the wrong decision. Its really unethical psycho shit that plays with peoples addictiveness.

CONLUSION: Everyone should let people decide whether they want to pay or not. I mean I dont give a fuck about official servers I want private servers that are FREE. And I want to play with my friends for FREE.  Keep the fee for people that invest way to much time with their games and need tournaments or achivements and other stuff to boast their ego.

If they make it optional i would be fine with it (like ps+ in ps3)

But if it were mandatory i would be done with online gaming. At least in consoles

PS Plus shows us that simply paying for it, doesn't make the servers better. I have a PS4 and have had it since launch and it's servers are not any better than they were on PS3. The free games are nice though.

Over all, online should be free. Do PC gamers pay to play online? No? Why is that? It should always be free.

Free online didn't help them so far..Not many seem to see it as an advantage when choosing sides.

If they were to have a paid subscription they would need to improve their online features drastically and also give out some free games like both Xbox gold and ps+ do at the moment. Otherwise it would be useless and the comparisons between ps+/xbox gold and the nintendo subs would be even worse than the comparisons you had showing how better the ps+ service was than gold in the 7th gen (which ultimately led MS to include free games in the gold subs).

Basically they need to improve their online game hugely or charge a much cheaper price (say $15 or $20) to make it successful.

There are many Nintendo games I can think that are great online.Mario strikers comes to mind first.Mario Kart is another.Kid Icarus is loved by many I heard too as well as pokemon games.Brawl is great too...when it decides to work.
