Much needed. They're trying to achieve dat magical 1080P.

They already achieved it with Forza 5.

An extra 8% power should ensure that the Xbox One runs at the same resolution as the PS4 but at a lower FPS, or at a slightly lower resolution and the same fps, which is good enough for me and most Xbox gamers I imagine.

Don't think so. The raw GPU power difference is around 50%. Even if they removed voice and video it wouldn't made for that. We will see differences in multiplats for the rest of the gen, it's not a PS360 case where both are similar and one just is easier to develop. It's two consoles with the same architecture and with a reasonable power difference.

XOne games will start to popup in 1080p not because of MS improvements, but because devs will start to use its power correctly. It's the start of the gen, we are seeing PC ports, PS360 ports and badly optimizated games, things will change a lot in the next few years.

Exactly !  The difference between PS4 and XOne GPU is significant, considering the full power of both, not considering the XOne GPU reduced for Kinect and PS4 full power :)  So, even if you use the XOne GPU at full power you have that significant difference we already know.  The difference is even bigger when you have this 10% reserved for Kinect. I think many members here still didn't get it. It's not that XOne is receiving a magical extra 8% comparing VS PS4, they might have an extra 8% over their GPU reduced by 10%... I believe this is not very clear for some;  PS4 multiplatforms games will always be better on PS4 because of better hardware. easy as that.   But again, less % of power reserved for Kinect is ''better'' for XOne games, just forget the "VS PS4", it is finished this Gen. It's over, performance speaking.

The gaming media is trying to get more stories from these that indeed exist. PS360 was a situation to report, it was similar powered consoles with one of them underdelivering because of the architecture. In PS4/One case, there is nothing to write home. It's a visible difference, there is no secret sauce, API diff, cloud power or anything to get over it. Multiplats will always be better on PS4. People even say that some multiplats could do better on One, but that's much unlikely. If you optmize a game for One, it is optimized for PS4, its the same architecture. If I simply don't do nothing to improve the PS4 version, I can just give it a better framerate or put extra antialiasing. Its like discussing PS2 vs. GameCube graphics. PS2 is weaker and that is a fact, games will look worse.

It's not like it will impact One. It will receive the same games with minor to decent graphical differences. It's not like Wii U that will have problems with ports simply because it has much less raw power and uses an older shader model. Power diffs are only a problem when they require you to rewrite massive parts of your engine (or simply use a new one like the Wii), and that's not the case in One and PS4 because they are the most similar competitor consoles ever made.

@those asking why using the GPU for audio:

I haven't read the whole thread, but just in case nobody wrote it yet, yes, it makes sense. A GPU has HW features and optimisations that allow it to do DSP work a lot more efficiently than a general purpose CPU. It routinely does it when it applies filters to graphics data, for example, and add-multiply operations are also routinely used when multiplying matrices and vectors for the geometric transformations, but doing it on audio data is not very different, well, the difference is just that it's a lot lighter computational load, hence the small amount of GPU power it needs.

The XBox One has a pretty heavy audio DSP so it isn't quite clear why the 2% exist in the first place...

I don't know but MS itself said 10% are reserved to Kinect's audio and video processing.

So they inded use for that purpose.

Maybe they reserved it to allow devs to totally use that DSP power for their games, if they want, and still have the necessary power for other audio processing, like Kinect commands. Maybe conceding the DSPs totally to the game allows it smoother audio processing and avoids stuttering even under the heaviest load. It's the first possible reason that sprang to my mind, and BTW my original answer was actually for those that asked "why the GPU instead of the CPU" (I should have specified it better), I can't really answer your question for sure, instead, I can only try and guess.

So one game is enough? The standards have gotten much lower i see.

You won't play other games?

Doesnt bother me. As long as it doesnt affect the all in on e experience. Then cool.
