Forums - Gaming - YOUR 5 most overrated games of last generation

Haven't played Portable Ops, and wasn't really counting it here (that's why I said 5 mainline entries - 1 2 3 4 + PW).

I just think it's an odd game.  There are far too many cutscenes, even compared to previous games.  The globe-trotting settings aren't as good as Shadow Moses or the jungle and they're only barely better than the big shell.  Bosses are nowhere near as memorable.

I'd rate 1 better on story and bosses and worse on gameplay; 2 better on gameplay and bosses but worse on story; 3 better on story, gameplay and bosses and PW better on story and gameplay.  That leaves 4 at the bottom of the heap.

It's not a bad game either.  I enjoyed it.  It's just, 1 and 3 are spectacular; 2 & PW are very good and 4 is just "good".

Well as long as you don't think it's a "bad" game, I can live with that. xD

The cutscenes seem to be the biggest thing with everyone and obviously, that's understandable. But you and I both know the importance of the story to the overall enjoyment of MGS and just how complicated it can get. MGS4 had the huge task of concluding everything and the game still came out to be an acceptable length. Gameplay-wise, I would say the variety was the same as MGS3, which isn't bad at all. There was little to no backtracking compared to MGS1 and 2, and overall the pace is good. I guess if you heavily favored 1 and 2, then you might think the game is boring. I personally love it all.

I disagree about the locales. I mean, there is no reason to think MGS4 was somehow worse in this regard compared to previous games. Going to Europe, revisiting Shadow Moses, and ending at Outer Haven were all memorable to me. I guess the Middle East part wasn't that exciting. Boss fights I thought were pretty much the same compared to other MGS games, with some being good and others being not so memorable. Particularly I thought the Rex vs. Ray fight was epic and the last boss fight was memorable. The boss battles with the Beauty and the Beast Unit could have been better, but again not every boss fight can afford to be epic.

I'll just take up this part.  I think my problem with the locales is that a big part of them were in places I didn't like.  I found the middle east incredibly boring compared to the previous games; and Europe wasn't much to my liking.  I did enjoy Outer Haven but that's the final act of the game and so isn't a massive part of the full title.  Shadow Moses was okay, but it was literally just playing on my nostalgia factors rather than anything else.

And I disagree hugely about the boss fights.  The Beauty & Beast unit was a massive, massive letdown compared to FoxHound & The Cobra Unit, and I'd daresay I didn't enjoy them as much as Dead Cell either.  They just weren't all that memorable to me.  Octopus was dull; Raven was kind of fun; Wolf was alright and Mantis was gimmicky.  I certainly wouldn't rank them up there with things like Sniper Wolf; Fatman or The Fury.  All the other games have incidental bosses, too, and MGS4's weren't great for me.  Rex v. Ray was a spectacle fight that I didn't enjoy as much as the individual fights against Rex in 1 and Ray in 2; and the final boss was atrocious (I can see why Kojima did what he did, but it controlled like arse and I really didn't enjoy it).  Certainly nothing on Solidus or The Boss.  There were some high points - Vamp was cool and I liked the bike chase with EVA, but the latter was pretty much just a recreation of the bike chase from 3 and so it didn't really have the same impact.

And after saying all this, you'd think I hate the game.  I don't.  Those bosses were still various degrees of fun and legions ahead of most other games.  It's just Metal Gear Solid isn't "most other games" to me and I hold it in higher regard because of previous consistency.  4 was more a "disappointment" than a bad game; something I enjoyed but wanted to enjoy more.

5: Far Cry 3, it was pretty cool but people went way overboard with the doting on this one, it was not amazing and had some horrible flaws.

4: GTA IV, everything was shrunk in this title and they started experimenting with "realistic" handling cars and a poor cover system. The "moral" choices were a decent addition but it was way too black & white to add any real depth.

3: Gran Turismo 5, waited for years and years and recieved a game where 80% of the cars were PS2 material, sound was still lawnmower flat, less tuning and customization and a bunch of awesome tracks removed, heavier online focus as time went by. All could be forgiven if the game had a medium sized budget and a relatively short development cycle; it had neither.

2a: Wii Sports, I really neved saw the charm in this, my sister has it and I've played it a fair deal but never fell for it. The Wii concept is easy to imagine as something to spread via word of mouth but Wii Sports seems like a barren recommendation to me.

2b: Tied with Wii Sports; Mass Effect, the first one was a pretty good RPG but with gaping flaws and staggeringly naive "moral" system like Fallout 3 and NV, the second one was more or less a shooter with some RPG elements and I never even got to the third one. This series marks the decline of Bioware since they were unfortunate enough to end up under the thumb of EA.

1: Anything Call of Duty post Modern Warfare 1, these games have become the very symbol of the 7th gen's most detrimental traits; focus on superficial idiocy, poor writing, massive online focus killing the incentive for creating a decent single player experience, massive visual and marketing budgets and just overall holding back gaming as a whole by showing that stupid repetition sells.

GTA 4 is the only one that's coming to me right now.

ufff impossible to do

If there's a word that describes this gen is overrated (people reviews based on the hype)

Some of these games aren't necessarily bad, but some left me puzzled why they were so well-recieved when I felt they were a step down from the previous entry in the series.

No particular order for these:

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Grand Theft Auto IV
Metal Gear Solid 4
Bastion
Uncharted

I've played each of these games and own the platforms these games were released on. I welcome differing opinions, but please direct accusations of fanaticism toward someone else please.

Crysis 2 and Assassin's Creed 3 are generally considered disappointing.

The other games on your list received significantly more praise.
