It generally sells as much or better than Zelda. The last Donkey Kong game sold 6 million units on Wii + 1 million on 3DS.
In the second half of the 90s it was probably the biggest Nintendo franchise along with Mario. People forget that because there were no Donkey Kong Country games for a decade after Microsoft bought Rare.
I think the difference is that people think there is a large Zelda fanbase, so Zelda is always guaranteed to sell a few millions, while Donkey Kong doesn't have hardcore fans as far as I know.
