Is Donkey Kong really such a big deal for Nintendo? I mean yes I like the Donkey Kong games but going by the hype in this forum it seems to be almost savior like as a franchise. I always regarded Donkey Kong more like an add-on franchise to Mario but never really something big on its own. I guess I'll see when it comes out how big it really is.

No one game is going to be Wii U's savior, but DKC is still a major franchise. According to VGC, DKCR sold over six million copies (and counting), and in a sense, you could call it a bigger, more savior-like franchise than Zelda currently is.

So it's even bigger than Zelda? Didn't expect that. I'm being serious here since I've not been following Nintendo fandom for the past gen. I never thought of it as big because it is just another platformer.

I could however see the appeal in Metroid, Starfox and F-Zero because they are unique in their own way.

In a sense. There's no real scientific way to determine how large the Zelda fanbase is, or how effective a new Zelda game is at pushing hardware. But, going by sales, DKC has the apperance of being more relevant.
