Forums - Gaming - All Zelda Games After Majora's Mask Are UNACCEPTABLE

I do not agree with your point sorry. All Zelda games are great games on their own.

I do agree that making an HD edition of Win Waker wasn't a smart decision. The game is awesome but it's by far the worst 3D Zelda game!

I disagree with your opinion. In fact, the game might be my 2nd favorite Zelda or even my favorite. I agree the bosses are awful (However I disagree, I loved the first boss), but besides the Great Bay temple, I loved all the dungeons.

The side quests can't be completed in ten minutes, or atleast most of them. Take the Anju and Kafei side quest for example, which finishes right before the end of the third day, and starts on the first day. Sure, you could skip ahead through the days and not do anything in between, but that isn't the best way to manage your time.

I personally love the story of Majora's Mask, it was very unique and had a different and darker direction than most Zelda titles. Ocarina of Time, the game you seem to be comparing the game to the most, has the most generic of Zelda stories. It could basically be summed up as "Link needs to save Hyrule." And sure, the point of Majora's Mask is also to save Termina, but it's also to get back Majora's Mask, and you only have three days. The story comes more from the interesting characters you meet. For example, there is a swordsmaster in Clock Town that is extremely cocky and is all like "BRING ON THE MOON I'LL SLICE IT IN HALF" and then when you find him at the end of the third day, he's cuddled up in a corner trembling in fear saying "I don't want to die." Tell me a character in Ocarina that is that well "human." The characters add to the world and it helps you understand Termina a lot more than you could ever understand Hyrule.

On the topic of linearity, I have no idea what you're talking about. You can play the game for 3 hours and just do side quests and explore. There are also mini skulluta dungeons that will keep you busy. The game also has a SHIT TON of heart pieces, some of which actually do require lots of effort. Plus, Ocarina is linear in all honesty. The dungeons are still in a set order, and the game is weak on side quests. Just because it has a bigger (and emptier) overworld, doesn't immediatley take away the fact that the game is still more or less point a to point b. Ocarina is my 4th favorite Zelda ever made, but the fact that people think it is the end all be all most well designed Zelda kinda infuriates me. But, we all have opinions.

The Anju/Kafei sidequest is the one everyone nerdgasms over, but it's by far the longest sidequest in the game and the only complicated one. Most others are just fetch quests or "be at a specific spot at a specific time." I would love for someone to tell me what is so great about the sidequests in Majora's Mask without once mentioning that one in particular.

The story has nothing to do with the design of the game. People being too boners about a game's story to properly criticize the game design is what led to The Walking Dead winning GOTY 2012 everywhere, and I won't have any of it in my Zelda discussions. I assert that Majora's Mask is poorly designed compared to other Zelda games and if you want to refute my claim, you'll have to present something other than "but the story is so good man."

Your comments about linearity are true of every Zelda game since (and including) Ocarina. They all have sidequests that can be tackled in almost any order. The main quest of Majora's Mask is entirely linear and that's what I was getting at. There are far more opportunities for "sequence breaking" in Ocarina and Wind Waker (and, yes, even Skyward Sword) than there are in Majora's Mask.

I never contended that Ocarina is the BEST Zelda game. Only that it is far better than Majora's Mask.

And I would be fully prepared to play through the two games side-by-side and lay out in detail the reasons the dungeons in Majora's Mask are objectively inferior to those in Ocarina.

Essentially every single side quest in any Zelda game is a fetch quest. The happy mask quest, the biggoron sword quest, etc. All are incomplicated and easy to understand. This could be applied to the side quests in Skyward Sword, Twilight Princess, and even Wind Waker. Majora's Mask side quests atleast have some amount of variety. Going to mention the quest where you fight off alien's in a barn, or complete a mini dungeon full of skulutas to get the mask of truth.

The dungeons in Majora I felt we're more difficult. Try playing through Stone Temple Tower without being confused at first, or The Great Bay temple. I felt that the dungeons were more what I wanted from Zelda.

I don't think we're ever going to agree on which one is better, so I'm just going to say that I respect your opinion and I do understand your argument XD

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

I'll side with the_dengle on the Majora's Mask design choices.
It's probably the most linear game in the Zelda series, almost every side quest is meaningless and there's too few dungeons. On top of that, really the only good dungeon in the game is the Stone Tower Temple. The only good boss is Goht, the boss of the second dungeon. The rest in both categories is uninspired and mediocre to bad (for Zelda standards anyway).

I'll actually side with toastboy on the story and time-mechanic in Majora's Mask.
It's simply untrue that the player has to re-do things. Every important part of the game stays when rewinding time, and the only instance in the game that has to be done twice is getting the title-deed for the Deku in Clock Town. Saying turning back time in the game is 'broken', 'unnecessary' or god-forbid 'gimmicky' is ignorant, that's actually the story of the game. It's all it's about, you can't take that away, because it wouldn't be the same game anymore. It's like saying Skyward Sword could be done without the motion control; it can't.

To the actual OP though, I don't agree to most of it.
All the games that came after Majora's Mask, save for two of the handheld games (*ahum*Four Swords and Minish Cap*ahum*), are good. One more than the other sure, but they're all worthy entries in the series. I'd say no to co-op, revisiting dungeons (which technically you can do in most games already, but would be pointless anyway) and voice-acting. However, I would agree to the point of a new entry needing to be bigger with more complex worlds and puzzles, with a have a more mature realistic style which is, yes, like Twilight Princess. I also agree it needs to be more 'down to earth' and simpler in gameplay-design, recapturing the core so to say, without resorting to elaborate schemes like the boats, the train and the bird in recent games

For the record, I'd rank Majora's Mask at least 4th among Zelda games, after Ocarina of Time, Link's Awakening and Twilight Princess. 5th and 6th would be A Link to the Past and Skyward Sword, but my mood depends on the precise order of my #4, #5 and #6 games. I agree Wind Waker, even after the remake (which did make it better) is the weakest 3D Zelda.

The only thing I agree is that WW is the weaker Zelda.

Proud to be the first cool Nintendo fan ever

Number ONE Zelda fan in the Universe

DKCTF didn't move consoles

Prediction: No Zelda HD for Wii U, quietly moved to the succesor

Predictions for Nintendo NX and Mobile

YEEEESSSSS. Totally agree.

WW was ok.

TP looked to HAPPY. OOT and MM looked more adult orientated. And that even comes across far better in its graphics imo.

Nintendo destroyed my gaming soul with the GC.

Starfox Adventures was much more fun to me than WW.

There hasn't been one good Zelda Game since Majora's Mask in my opinion.. Twilight Princess was just okay, too easy. Majora's Mask was one of the greatest games of all time. It needs a sequal with a mature Link, a dark setting, and realistic graphics. None of that horrible lazy Wind Waker/Skyward sword/Hyrule Warriors pixles. Nintendo wants to remake Zelda games? Okay, but remake good ones and keep them on consoles. Why on earth would they re-release OoT on the 3DS when it's a console game? Why would they remake arguably the worst game in the series into HD? Nintendo can gain back its lost fanbase if they bring some horror-ness into Zelda and modernize the franchise. Who's with me?! Who else is angry by the direction Nintendo has been taking Zelda? The Zelda franchise is UNACCEPTABLE and Nintendo and its fans should be getting back to the roots of the series with a way to save anywhere you'd like, co-op, more day/night events, more complex puzzles, a larger world, etc. Zelda games should have more accessable controls and more adventure traits in it. Players should be able to re-do temples whenever they feel like it. Voice acting should be apparent.

The great thing about living in America (as you claim in your profile) is that you are perfectly entitled to not spend any money, time, or even have to think about videogames that are unacceptable to you. Great news!

Also, if you can be bothered to get the needed permits, you have a constitutional right to assemble as many people as you can who share these views and stage a demonstration stating your displeasure. Perhaps public lands around the headquarters of Nintendo of America would be a good spot? This might even serve to give you a more satisfying feeling of recieving attention and making yourself seem important, a great side benefit would be that VGChartz would hopefully be less burdened by needing to indulge your attention-seeking behaviour.

I think you are the first person I have ever seen call Twilight Princess a "happy" looking game.  I thought it looked a bit dreary, almost as if it was...

...twilight.
