Forums - Gaming - Why This Generation Will Be the Worst

This is my counter rant. It's often as rambly as this guys video was. TL;DR is that this guy is just mad that the new games are just like the old games and not even Nintendo can do much about that. Tough shit. It's almost always been like that with few exceptions.

1. Asymmetrical gameplay is an underwhelming niche concept and will never be a system seller. It just is. Most games do not benefit, both as a fun factor and a gameplay factor, from having this tacked onto it. New game types might be really fun with this as the central part of its gameplay but old genres no way.

2. Every generation we have ever had has been an extension of the previous generation. Sure there have been new game types added throughout the generations, some better than others, but we are still just playing _games_. Whether it is better graphics, 3D, motion control, asymmetrical play, VR, or whatever else the future gives us we are still playing games. And to further illustrate this, often times old game types come back with a vengeance trumping other games with 'new' stuff. Witness 3D mario vs 2D mario recently. Innovation is meaningless unless the games are fun.

3. Sorry to say, often enough, the bastion of gaming, Nintendo, release games that are not as fun as other games and often get stuck selling the same crap over and over just as bad as the poster child of selling rehash after rehash, EA.

4. Developers and consumers aren't flawless. This guy cries about consumers buying shitty games and being bitten in the ass with a faulty product then defending their purchase. Well, welcome to human nature and economics. Guaranteed if the same developer releases something in that series again it will sell less unless they decide to redeem themselves with a stellar product.

5. Graphics have been the number one thing that advances in video games since the concept of video games started and he laments that people are still 'enraptured' about it? Give me a break. I'll take better graphics, better AI, or in general just more power over half backed innovative concepts like asymmetrical play, '3D', or stuff like Kinnect.

6. Hype. Yeah people get caught up in hype, it's another one of those human nature things. Lots of products turn out not to live up to the hype. Perhaps almost all of them. And I include tons and tons of first party games from SONY, Microsoft, and Nintendo. Yeah thats right, Nintendo games are more often than not over hyped.

7. This guy needs to give more examples of games that actually live up to his expectations. Cause all I heard was Crysis 1 is better than the others released after it because none of the others after it had better gameplay, only better graphics. Well sometimes the first game perfects the gameplay and you _can't_ do better. We have often enough reached the pinnacles of gameplay and now games _can't get any better_. I am being perfectly serious. So in terms of advancements whats left are better graphics, AI, etc. Nothing that makes the gameplay better. Get used to it folks. This is where we are gonna be at for a long time.

8. The only thing this guy has right has that if you are disappointed you should voice your opinion. Of course you should.

I see lots of potential for the Wii-U... but Nintendo's reputation is still shell-shocked from the Wiis' audience jump.

Other than that I don't see much new. Old and improved though need not be bad.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand he have made a reply video. Haven't watched it yet, but here it is for those interested.

i see some problems, making a game is realy expensiv this generation. and i dont wanna life in a world where just AAAs and indiegames can survive. its a realy big problem for sony, psone and ps2 had so many smaller games that where great, ps3 hadnt so much and ps4 will have less, its to risky

graphic isnt cheap... 1080p costs a lot more then 480p or 720p.  x86 is nice, but next gen can do so much more. lighting isnt cheap too.

making a game will not get cheaper just because it runs on a supercharged midrange pc... the other cost will surge on next gen.

I think it's too premature to declare this the "worst gen ever," considering that we're barely a year in and no ultra-big exclusives minus 3D World have really come out.

No it doesn't.
1080P is just a resolution, it costs the same amount of money to build a game at 1080P or 720P.
I run a game at 1440P and beyond, if a developer supports my eyefinity set-up (Which has more total pixels than a 4k display) the game will look amazing, yet didn't cost the developer anything to implement, just a little bit of time to adjust a few settings like fov. - Which ironically I can also do myself.

The cost comes from improving assets to give you better graphics and sound in a game, but you can easily run a 720P game at 1080P with the same assets.
PC gamers have been doing that for decades, even old games that don't natively support widescreen or resolutions past 1024x768 can run at 1920x1080P, it didn't cost the developers a thing, yet the game can look significantly better.

The cost comes from Artists, Programmers, Sound designers, Story Writers etc'.
And because gamers demanded ever increasing levels of image quality, costs always increased.
This new generation costs should drop, at-least initially due to the more PC-like environment the consoles provide which reduces development time.

It's one of the most boring and bland, something like the NGC/PS2/Xbox generation, but worse.
Gamepad was the only thing almost interesting, but Nintendo decided that it was too good or complicated to release games for it.
