Forums - Gaming - Why This Generation Will Be the Worst

Ah, it's that time again. Every generation is going to be "the worst". So bloody annoying.

As someone who started gaming on the Atari 2600, I thought last gen was awesome and I look forward to the dramatic increase in RAM with next gen. I expect to see the most successful of the small developers stepping up with some impressive efforts and I think we'll see more progression from Microsoft and Sony with regards to digital distribution. Microsoft's mistake was trying to force-feed what they wanted to do rather than to present options and incentives to their consumers.

I'm looking forward to it.

this gen will be the worst because developers put out cross gen launch titles with no huge next gen gameplay advancements, plus they revealed next gen exclusive elements like pay to win and buggy titles, and then it's also to be the worst ever because as gamers, we accept these practices and because people like call of duty

And what next gen gameplay did previos gens bring.

At the end of the day gaming is laying ur ass on a couch and pressing a few buttons.  Waggle proved a casual fad even ninty abandoned it.  And kinetic is a fancy tv controller.

This will easily be the best gen.  As their clearly is one true gaming machine out the 3 of them.  The ps4 will be gaming at its best.

Previous gens brought a lot, motion control (and the new gameplay styles that came with it), improved online (which I really don't see in the PS4/XB1), touch screen and casual and mobile gaming and stuff (not hardcore, but still innovation). The 7th gen brought a lot of new things. Right now, the 8th gen just looks like smoothing out, and optimization of 7th gen concepts.

Secondly, Nintendo didn't abandon "waggle" Sony did, and the new Kinect is very innovative. Also, there are 3 true gaming machines.

Exactly what game shows the new Kinect innovativenes ????

I own all three, and only PS4 comes of as a pure gaming machine.  Bone is clearly not a dedicated gaming machine and WiiU does not kow whats its doing.  Pad is pointless to me right now, i have the consoe yet have no use for its controller.

And where is sas you say not abandoned waggle on the U ? casue my U came with a tablet controller and no waggle at all.  As an owner i cant say i see anything "motion" controls about this console.

What the internet explosion of the past 10 years has done is give idiots a louder voice than ever before. Everything sucks, everything is doomed based on 5 minutes on the market, there are no games for consoles not even 3 months old and so on, so on, so freaking on.

Is it so damn hard for people to understand that you can't change a whole industry over night based on NO demand.

What are people buying right now? Call of Duty and the same games they've bought before.

Are people actually asking for something else? No. They are asking for games. Games they've played before, games that are true and tested, games they enjoy. You do not innovate for the sake of innovation, just to say that you did.

You want different games? Define "different" then, because at the moment all I'm hearing is whining about how everything is the same...but no other solution is actually given.

This is how last gen worked as well.

People started liking games without health bars...it became a norm, for better or for worse.

People started liking stream lined experiences...it became the norm, for better or for worse.

People started liking social integration of their games...it became the norm, for better or for worse.

People started liking online multiplayer games...it became the norm, for better or for worse.

People started liking "cinematic" experiences...those became the norm, for better or for worse.

Everything that came as changes over the PS2 / Gamecube / XBox era has been gradual and driven by demand, came as small changes that got popular later on and nobody agrees on whether they're good changes or bad ones.

And in today's landscape everything is considered as being doomed. We have more ways to play than ever before, more models to playing, more indie titles and the Big 3 trying to outdo each other at every turn.

What the Hell more do the idiots of the internet want? The Playstation 9? For me it's become something absolutely Sci-Fi what these overgrown man children have come to expect.

Ok now could you please name ONE game of the PS3/360 launch that wouldn't be possible on the previous gen with downscaled graphics? Because I don't remember one.

And I do see some little improvements that wouldn't be possible on last gen: Drivatars on Forza, BF4 isn't just downgraded on PS3 vs PS4, it's a worse game with restricted MP. Another games like Fifa already run on a superior engine than on last gen.

Of course the graphical jump might not be as noticeble than last gen from SD to HD, but I do think we're on the right path.

Game of the year 2017 so far:

5. Resident Evil VII
4. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
3. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
2. Horizon Zero Dawn
1. Super Mario Odyssey

Not 100% true but last generation many said it because it was true in their case,  Games cutting content/split screen, DLC on day one, lot of FPS to less JRPG's etc..

"What are you doing from a gameplay percpective that can't be done last gen"

Wtf does he expect them to do...don't offer a problem without a solution.

The next big NEW IMPORTANT thing for GAMING will be Oculus Rift as a standard(addon) or Virtual Reality in general.
Everything until then will be just a power race - Before that we already did experience everything.
Motion Controls are completely useless and were a time and money waste in general.Neither the Wii Stuff,Move or Kinect will bring anything relevant to GAMING to make a gamepad obsolete.Even with Oculus Rift we still need those but it is giving the player a useful new experience which can be implemented without hurting the game itself.
O.R really has the potential and possibility to enhance the experience of a game already working without it too.On the other side...Kinect Fable ;)

In terms of gaming this Gen is going to be probably the best or the 2nd best behind the PS2 Time just cause we have a console in lead that is purely focusing on gaming again.
With the PS4 the variety and diversity in genres is coming back too after we lost most of it in the Last Gen.The last "moments" of the PS3 showed already signs of that with developers trying a lot new things again or bringing back old things that people liked before the PS360.
Gladly this time it is the most powerful and cheapest console at the same time too so it will have a slightly easier path to go.

Edit: 5 minutes*

I'll break it down for you.

He said the gen is only going to offer better graphics and no innovation.  You know what I'm saying?  Wii U hasn't fulfilled its potential.  You know what I'm saying?   You know what I'm saying?  You guys.  You see what I'm saying?  You know what I'm saying?  Too many micro-transactions.  You know what I'm saying? Graphics graphics.  You see what I'm saying.

I haven't even watched the video yet and I already have a hunch that this is exactly how it's going to go. LMFAO.

I have a strong belief that console sales peaked last gen, and that this gen will not be able to match last gens total sales across all platforms. I think the PS4 will have a strong start but then will slow down. The PS4 lacks a new media drive which pushed sales to people who wanted a dvd/blu ray player cheap in the previous generations (I still hear people say they own a PS3 just to play blu rays and don't even use it as a gaming device). Microsoft left a bad taste in gamer's mouths with their attitude towards DRM on consoles, which I wouldn't be surprised if we haven't heard the last of it. And Nintendo failed to impress people with their touchscreen gamepad like they had done with motion controls (but that didn't stop Sony and Microsoft from scotch taping similar solutions to their consoles out of fear that Nintendo might beat them to something that sold like hotcakes again). The Vita is struggling and the 3DS needed a price slashing to sell well.

So this gen is looking like it will be sort of average, but I don't think it will be a devastating market crash... yet.

My other major concern would be how many gaming studios are going to fold in the struggle to make a game that sells. As we have seen in last gen, you have to produce an AAA quality title for the chance of profitability. And if your AAA grade doesn't sell well, well buddy, you're up **** creek. Ninja Theory have already announced their departure from consoles to concentrate on mobile. We have created a culture where we can only appreciate consoles that have high end specs and make a joke out of those that aren't, and only appreciate games that push those high end specs to the limits. It's getting beyond ridiculous. And I wouldn't be surprised if we do eventually head into another gaming market crash sometime in the future, because the market cannot be sustained with the attitudes it currently holds.

Terrible assessment. The PS1 arguably caused the biggest re-evaluation of the industry, and CD-ROM wasn't exactly some obscure new format.

Also, I can say I still hear people using their Wii's as Netflix streamers and not gaming devices, would you take my word for it?
