Forums - Sales - What The Hell Is Going On With Software Sales In The US?

if im right those numbers dont count digital sales, i own 4 games and none on disc at all., madden, cod, bf4 and killzone all digital purchases.

Not many games to chose from, and hardware sales don't necessarily correlate to software sales, especially during new console launches and around the holidays. Not everyone bought a game with the purchase of a PSOne.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

*Hint* Their software SUCKS!!!

Well, there also aren't a whole lot of good games.

Yup. I thought AC4 would do better on next (current?) gen though. That game is awesome.

I wouldn't pay $400+ for an upgraded version of a game I could already buy. It may be just me though. Let alone Xbox One prices. Lol.

New 3D Mario outselling launch software surprises anyone?

40mil install base vs 1.4mil install base. What do you expect? Every ps4 and xbone owner to buy a new game every week?

Typically all the people who just bought the console and a tiny percentage of the install base that hasn't recently bought a game buy a game every week. This is why it makes complete sense that ps4 and xbone software has completely fallen off.

The vast majority of the million people who bought the new consoles the first few weeks are not gonna buy any new games for a while so most game sales will be from people who just bought the console the past week or two.

Remember guys typical end game tie ratios are 10 games per console and thats after 8 years. People buy much fewer games then you guys expect.

Wii U software sales are a bit higher because a significant amount Wii U owners haven't bought a game recently while virtually every xbone and ps4 owner have recently bought games. Not to mention every Wii U comes bundled with one game or another that vgchartz counts towards these sales.

What is going on?

The most recent week is from just before Christmas, many Wii U owners who didn't already have NSMB U or 3D World probably got them for Christmas. Did you notice that 3D World sales numbers are higher than Wii U unit sales numbers?

Seems entirely reasonable, to me, especially if we assume that the PS4 units made available most recently are the basic pack rather than one of the bundles.

Note that it's entirely possible that PS4/XBO sales numbers haven't been corrected for sampling biases (there's no solid reference to make that determination, yet), but there's nothing about the numbers that are particularly unreasonable, given which week the data is from.

OP:

PS3 and XB360 are growing old, while PS4 and XB1 are still young, and their user base in November, excellent for a launch, was still too small as absolute number. Add to this that Ninty totally botched the end of Wii's life and its transition to Wii U and that the latter started doing really better only this December (with good opportunities to catch, if Ninty does things well next year), while November was a disaster for it except on BF, and that Activision totally botched CoD, that used to be the strongest game in November, particularly in USA, and you obtain a particularly unlucky overall situation, despite the excellent HW launches. November 2014 has excellent probabilities to be a lot better than the last one for SW. But maybe then you'll be able to claim doom d0m3 for HW!

If digital downloads aren't tracked that is part of your answer and it will only get worse as this gen will go on. I don't plan on buying discs ever again and the same goes with some of my friends with next gen consoles.
