People who bought the WiiU are either parents/kids or Nintendo fans. The games the WiiU sold like "hotcakes" are targetting both.

PS. Hotcakes is a trendy term, at least in VGChartz

... uhhhh well yeah people who bought the Wii U are Nintendo fans. Generally people don't spend 300 bucks on a product they're not a fan of O_o...
| gigantor21 said: So, uh...what the fuck? The PS4 and Xone have been selling great since launch. Yet when I look at the software charts, NSMBU and Luigi U being bundled with the WiiU was enough for them to handily beat every retail game on the Xone/PS4 this week. 3D World was even higher, being the only next-gen title in the top 10. Not only that, but goddamned Rocksmith on the 360 (67,000) sold more than all the exclusives on those systems. Forza 5 was highest for the Xone at 62k, while Shadow Fall for PS4 is too low for it's number to be listed. And that's the only PS4 exclusive that made the top 75, despite it being the highest selling next gen console this week. While 3D World selling well is hardly a reason to be upset, I bring this up because this comes in the wake of software being down by 24% compared to November 2012, according to NPD. This despite two brand new consoles coming out that sold gangbusters, and new Battlefield, COD, Arkham, Pokemon and GTA games being on the market. Likewise, VGChartz also has total US software last year (December 22nd 2012) ahead by about 2 million units. What the hell? Despite three new consoles on the market, tons of big releases, several crazily priced bundles, and the overall market for games being way bigger than in '05/'06, the slide in game sales we've been seeing over the past few years isn't slowing down. There's no reason sales shouldn't be higher than last year, let alone down by 25%. And there's no way such a big drop could just be the result of digital sales in the wake of everything that's come out recently. What is going on? |
There is several things that could possibly be going on.
1. Tracking problem hands down. This is the most likely scenario but barring this of course, here is something else to consider.
2. Yes the new systems have been selling well which is both a blessing and a curse, it could be that people that went in and paid for the new systems did not have the budget to buy either a direct retail game or multiple retail games for the systems while they held back on getting software for their old systems, as thus they settled for online games which are cheaper for now until they can get a/a few retail games., or they bought access.(Extra controllers and what not) instead of buying games entirely or a combination of the two. (Or they bought DLC for games they have already been enjoying)
3. If people only bought a single retail game for the system then it is likely that most games on next gen would be lower on charts or not appear at all.
4. The old systems are still selling too, and while software sells for them is down it is more then likely biting into next gen software sells.
Or
5. combination of all the above. (Some things have been known to be both overtracked and undertracked here.)and it would make sense that a combiantion of those things led to a 25% decrease.
Nintendo Wii by generations...
1. Wii
2. Wii U
3. Wii O U
Predictions made by gamers concerning the current Nintendo line up of games.
Pikmen 3= Little Bump to nothing. (Got Little Bump)
Wind Waker HD= Won't sell anything (The explosion happened here and at one time 4 Wii U games was in the Amazon top 100)
Super Mario 3D World= Won't help at all looks cheap. (Currently the most sought after Wii U game and continuing the Wii U increase.)
Frankly, it is probably better to just wait for NPD and quarterly financials before trying to parse out any reasons. For example, 3D World for the week ending the 14th was over 130k in the US a few days ago. Now it is lower, and the week ending the 21st is 125k. Next week the numbers might be different again. Then another adjustment in January when NPD numbers come out. Even the November numbers could still use a correction, VGC has retail sales 14k higher than the number Nintendo gave for retail and digital combined.
I wish there was a way to track digital sales, or at least see digital vs. retail comparisons on a few games.
The other consoles available games are either crap or available elsewhere. Not surprising in the least.

Ding ding ding!!! We have a winner! lol
| Soleron said: It's simple. PS4 and One didn't increase software demand because they're not expanding the market. They're only replacing PS3 sales with PS4 ones. I expect this to mislead companies into investing way too much in next-gen and then losing money when sales don't increase. |
Excellent point. Here's the ironic thing about it all; they are replacements to machines that were already fighting over a shrinking market. It's still shrinking. This gen will be ugly.
Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:
If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.
If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.
