I will say this. For a console that "went wrong", it sold 80 million consoles (with virtually no help from Japan) and it's STILL getting support from first and third parties as it goes into its NINTH year on the market. The only thing it did wrong was sell less than its competition. Wii overtook it in a short amount of time due to its phenomenal first several years and PS3 over the course of several years.

And people were saying "You see how they did with Xbox? They only supported it for four years. That's how the 360 will be." Boy, were they wrong. Instead of focusing on what the 360 did wrong, I like to think of what the 360 did right. I went from not wanting anything Xbox to having the 360 become my favorite console. That's a hell of an accomplishment to me.

First-party support? I guessed MS dropped the ball years ago... no support in the last two years.

I played Halo 4 last year.  It was pretty awesome.  Fable Anniversary comes out next year.

A little bit of support =/= No support, does it?  PS2 get a lot of support from Sony in it's eighth year?

I was over exaggeration but MS killed the support with Xbone.

About PS2... yeah... first-party game was launched after PS3 release and the same is happening to PS4 but that's Sony they did support plataform for years after the new one get in the market.

PlayStation brand is very strong, so even though MS had a lot of technical things it's favor, it was the brand underdog going into the last gen.
Xbox 360 hardware quality issues didn't help (RROD, noisy drives, etc.)

Now MS established it's brand in US and UK, but lost most of the technical things in their favor, and Sony's hardware design runs circles around MS again.

I'm aware of that.  However the PS2 launched in 2000.  The successor launched in 2006.  That's only six years (with the PS4 launching seven years later).  The Xbox 360 launched in 2005.  Its successor launched in 2013.  That's eight years of full support. Not bad, wouldn't you say?

Despite the things MS did wrong, it is important to note that this must be one of the greatest successes for a video game company ever, to grow almost four times compared to its predecessor, and creating great games at the same time.

I feel a bit dumb for doing this, but anyway, here I go!

2013 sucked in first party, I'll give you that.

Small support is better than no support

The 360 did just about everything right. Good exclusives, powerful hardware (aside from the shitty failure rate), smart marketing, etc.

It almost beat the PS3, whose (Playstation) userbase was monstrous coming into the next gen.

For the year that 360 released in my school it was non stop talk about it - and not that many talked about ps3 even tho most hadn't picked up either. 360 had a great marketing strategy that everyone knew about the new 'xbox'

360 success was more about Sony mistakes in my opinion.

Of course the machine was really good but Sony helped MS a lot. You can say the same about MS now they did everything wrong that helped Sony too.

This is what I believe as well.

maybe the question isnt what it did wrong? but why it wasnt able to be in 1st place despite a year headstart and doing so many things right
