360 success was more about Sony mistakes in my opinion.
Of course the machine was really good but Sony helped MS a lot. You can say the same about MS now they did everything wrong that helped Sony too.

By that logic, SNES is an fail too since it lost market share to Sega.

By that logic the SNES was not as successful as the NES in terms of hardware sales because of Sega's increased competition, which is true. That doesn't make the SNES a failure.
I think given the expansion of their market share (almost 4x the expansion), the stupid amount of money they have made off of Xbox Live and will continue to make off of it, and the vast spreading of their market recognition outside of America, would lead most to believe that the Xbox 360 did not go wrong in any sense of the word. The only blight I would argue was the debacle that was the failure rate at the beginning of its life cycle which MS seems to have moved past with minimal brand damage. So maybe not first place, but I don't think anyone would say MS is in bad position after the Xbox 360.
I don't think it did go wrong! I live in the U.S. of A. and this here's Xbox 360 country. The console was great. It did way better than expected. People on this very site felt it would reach fifty million consoles sold MAX, if it ever even managed to reach that.
Playstation's a bigger brand world wide and Nintendo, nobody saw the Wii coming. Xbox 360 did great. Now, the Xbox One on the other hand....I'm not so optimistic about it.

I'm not saying they failed this gen - far from, but how did they not dominate (of at least playstation) DA LIST (Feel free to add) of why xbox deserved to win! - They had captured a lot of Sony's exclusives! - Easier Hardware to work with - They had MULTIPLE IP's that sold in the multi-millions! Halo Fable Forza GOW. They didn't have many IP's that sold 1 or 2 million unlike quite a number of PS3's. - A universally accepted better controller. - They won the motion control war (against SONY, but hell, everyone lost that didn't they?) - They had exclusive deals with the BIG games (COD, Skyrim) - Minecraft for a year and a half before Sony - Strong(er?) marketing - More focus on products than Sony - Sitcoms and many other tv programmes, when they play games - it's 85% of the time (YES 85) xbox 360. Big Bang Theory with their Halo night, south park always said/had 360's, even Breaking Bad (Which is made by Sony Pictures) when Jesse is playing with that little kid. - Games almost always shown off on 360's at press events (or PC's with 360 controller, still brand recognition for xbox) - Cheaper price at launch compared to PS3 (599 US Dollahs! <3 KAZ) - They seemed to make exclusive deals with indie games that sold Mega! Minecraft, fez, mark of the ninja, super meat boy, braid.
MORE TO COME BRO!
But somehow they didn't dominate.... Any theories? |
A lot of these points come from an american perspective... Where they did come in first. I dont think a lot of them hold up in the worldwide market, which is why the 360 wasnt as successful. They have a great core business and focus here in the states, but they struggle in selling that business abroad...
Microsoft went wrong.
They dropped the 360 and their customers like yesterday's whore 2 years ago to focus on their new X1 and its TV features, etc.
Sony on the other hand, kept the love coming with the PS3.
Its obvious where they went wrong. They didnt care about customer satisfaction, and now they are paying for it.

Exactly. The 360 is a great machine; if anything, the fault's on the maker.
I am still confident XBox360 is in second place but that doesn't change the fact that MS showed alot less interest the last couple of years and beted heavily on the US market. That strategy will never hold up for someone aiming for #1. Japan is mostly irrelevant but Europe and rest of Asia are important markets.
